Re: September Trip Plans

Little Todd to Hugginin is going to be a rough day. According to my mileage chart, that's 19.1 miles (18.5 from the trail split & .6 to the campground), most of those being pretty tough trail. In 2002, when we were 19 years old, my friend & I went from Little Todd to Washington Creek. We pla...

Re: Newbies first trip to IR

I think your testing and experience you achieve this Spring as you take some trips at home will help shape your goals and expectations. A west end loop (typically called the Feldtmann loop) can be a very nice 4 day trip if your confidence and strength are good. Its popularity comes in part from the...

Re: Newbies first trip to IR

I'd suggest taking a water taxi to Moskey and making your way back. If that doesn't work out, then I'd suggest going to 3 mile, Daisy, and back to Rock Harbor. You can make a loop & not backtrack. While in Rock Harbor, a day hike to Scoville Point &/or renting a canoe to get to the Lookout L...

2016 Winter Study

Anybody know any information/ updates/ rumors/ whatever about the winter study? I've been checking the blog but it hasn't been updated from last year's study. Last year's first post was 1/19, so I was hoping for one by now.

Re: 1st timer Itinerary

Excitement, rounding the corner to 2016 Isle Royale Trips... I am easy, any day on Isle Royale is a good use of a day. That being said, if I had all of your campgrounds on a list to visit, I would : Day 1 - Arrive to Rock Harbor on the Queen and hike to Lane Cove Day 2 - Lane Cove to McCargoe Cove ...

Re: Fishing Potential Questions

The greatest fish dinner I ever had was a walleye out of Lake Whittlesey.

Re: West-to-East, End-to-End Itinerary Help

My friend & I went from Rock Harbor > Minong > Windigo > Greenstone > Rock Harbor in 2002 and came to these conclusions, which we still discuss today: -The Minong is rough. It is one of the most challenging trails we've ever done, & we've done the Georgia section of the AT & the Nyack/ C...

Re: Itinerary Suggestions

I'd suggest focusing on seeing as much as you can, even with covering some of the same trails twice. For example, I think the views from Todd/Little Todd are some of the best on the island. Who cares if you do an out-and-back from McCargoe? I'd find the sights that you want to see & go from there.

Re: McCargoe Cove

1. Very close. You can see the dock from a number of the shelters. 2. a) A loop around Chickenbone lake is not the most scenic, but there's a decent chance you will see Moose. b) A short trek to the copper mines is an interesting one. They contain some of the old equipment from when the island was u...

Re: Advice on short hikes?

It sounds like you are boating. If not then most of the following still applies. I'm not familiar with Finlander with respect to IR. The dock at the Edison Fishery is one of many public docks you may use but you cannot overnight. There is usually a volunteer or volunteer couple at Edison to help an...

Re: Advice on short hikes?

You can get from the dock to Lookout Louise. Just go to the northern side of Tobin Harbor and keep an eye out for the trail. As far as I remember, you can't miss it (or it's very difficult to). I went to Scoville Point for the first time this summer and it was amazing. Both places will require a cam...

Re: Feedback on 3MTA3's Itinerary

One nice feature of the tent sites in Chippewa Harbor is the apple orchard (orchard might be an exaggeration) that is back there. I'll check it out. Keep in mind with Moskey Basin that EVERYBODY likes Moskey Basin and as such it is a very popular campground and the sites/shelters fill up fast. I de...

Re: Feedback on 3MTA3's Itinerary

Wow! Thanks for the feedback! You guys are great! Maybe instead of going McCargoe>Todd>Richie, we'll spend an extra day at McCargoe exploring the copper mines or make our way down to Richie from McCargoe and save that extra day for our trek to Lane Cove. I really wanted to go back to Todd (and Littl...

Re: Feedback on 3MTA3's Itinerary

Thanks for the feedback! I'm an experienced backpacker and I've taken first timers on trips before. It seems like I'm the one to break in beginners! Short of clothing, I'm outfitting both of the newbies and they have a good sense as to what they're up for. The 15 year old goes on mountainous day hik...
