Re: Kayaking South Waters Info.

Aha. I guessed right, though your last post beat me to the punch. Heck, with 2 guys u can carry both kayaks simultaneously, albeit just a short distance down the tobin harbor trail. Then do tandem portaging the rest of the way- don't kill yourself. From where u pull your boats out of Tobin, you will...

Re: Kayaking South Waters Info.

The west end of Tobin is gorgeous. While hiking along there, i saw a Canadian white swan or something of the sort. My guess is that you plan to portage the kayak from Tobin over to 3mile camp. 2/3 mile portage. A little bit of up and down; not bad at all. When u first hike over to 3mile with your ge...

Re: Water taxi ride share anyone? May 31st RH to Moskey or C

All boat taxis are subject to lake and weather conditions. However, a taxi within Rock Harbor waters is nearly a safe bet to go as scheduled. Since you are hiking, and moskey suits your purposes just as well as chippewa harbor, i wouldn't take a chance on Chippewa. Go with moskey.

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

There is only one hour difference (actual time savings) if you take the V-2 along the south shore (vs. N shore). On the north run, you will cruise 2 miles down to the end of McC Cove. On the south run, you get a pretty good "peek" at Chippewa Harbor, which is very nice. If you are a backpa...

Re: Minong-Wash. Creek/Hug. Cove

Assuming you depart from the Minong Trail just to the west of the 990' high point (approx 85 yards west of the high point), you want to follow a bearing (using magnetic north) of 3 degrees (use 2 degrees as the default). Then keep your eye peeled for the sign that reads: "Free Wi-Fi in all room...

Re: Article about the last days of the Bounty: Why she went

A really nice piece of writing. The comments posted on the story make for good reading as well. Quite illuminating was the fact that the state-of-the-art emergency canister rafts did not have any sort of bailer included, much to the alarm of the survivors who occupied 2 of the rafts. It got me think...

Re: Minong-Wash. Creek/Hug. Cove

See the backcountry camping post for info on the rules. You will need approval to backcountry camp in zone 3 for that particular night. I've never been on the Minong, but studying the topo map, there is really only one good spot, and it happens to be 1/2 way between Wash Creek and N. Desor. If you l...

Re: Possible effects of sequestration

All Ranger III passengers must now disembark at Mott Island; backpackers will have to swim for the main shore of the island, and all packs must meet minimum flotation requirements. However, NPS will provide swimming fins for the crossing, and all hiking boots will be delivered dry as a bone and avai...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Cool chart, treeplanter! I struggled for a while trying to figure out what the legend means, wondering if 10/10 meant one whole foot thickness of ice or one meter thick. Turns out it is neither. Instead it is a measure of the ice concentration, defined as follows: "The ratio expressed in tenths...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

...the Rock Harbor trail is quite memorable. Yes, at spots it takes you right along the water's edge, yet you are high above it, and if the sun is right, the clarity and color of the water and the rocks and boulders on the lake bottom is incredible. McCargoe does have the community fire ring for so...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

Unless the weather is lousy, I would camp at Daisy Farm the first night, giving yourself a bit of a head start. With the mileage that you guys are used to, notwithstanding the rocks and tree roots (and more tree roots) along the Rock Harbor Trail, that first 7.5 miles (even with loaded packs) is rel...

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

Correction: The national geographic map doesn't accurately depict the location of the dock at Mott. It is shown a bit to the west, probably as to not interfere with the dashed line showing the Ranger's route (the dashed line IS right-on). So your buddy hikes to the mine pits (3 main pits), and just ...

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

The morning you board the Ranger, your 2 canoes will be "tagged" with red tags to indicate Mott. You will set your gear in large wheeled carts marked for Mott. At both Mott Island and Rock Harbor there is a water spicket conveniently located to fill your water containers/bottles in a jiffy...

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

No problem with campsite availability there in mid-june. After 2 nites at Richie Canoe camp, i would consider going with minimum gear (fishing gear/raingear/clothes on your back/tents/sleeping bags/matts/cook-kit/frying pan) to spend 1 nite at Wood Lake; then back to Richie Canoe. You could cache so...

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

Depending on how much time you will spend on the island, a good option for 5 guys/2 canoes is to take the queen to rock harbor and take the voyageur the very next AM to chippewa harbor. Then do the whittlesey-wood/siskiwit-intermediate-richie-moskey basin circuit. You have to carefully check and com...
