Re: First time visitor concerned about seasickness
I've tried several different types of anti-motion sickness medications and my personal choice for effectiveness and lack of side effects is the brand "Bonine", which is meclizine. But you should try any meds at home first to see if they make you groggy, or any other unwanted side effects.

Re: Canoe rentals at Windigo
Regarding weather - the concession operators traditionally don't rent their watercraft if the Marine Forecast FOR LAKE SUPERIOR is anything beyond a certain point. Protecting themselves from liability for poor judgement of customers? Anyway, even if your plans are all on protected water it doesn't t...

Re: Down sweater?
I always take my down sweater, or a puffy synthetic vest, to supplement my fleece pullover. But you could probably get by with a heavy fleece and a good longsleeved jersey, and as mentioned above a warm hat and gloves! It gets pretty cold at night; you are down off the ridges and often right on the ...

Re: Pepper Spray?
As a woman who has backpacked alone multiple times on Isle Royale, I can make a couple suggestions. If you need pepper spray to feel safe and secure, then it is a personal decision that I do not question. The challenge is in finding out how to transport it to the island. That being said, I have neve...

Re: Hambunking the Greenstone!?
There are plenty of trees on Isle Royale.....the "ridge" is for hiking, the campsites are typically off the ridge and down a ways in the forest and next to a lake (Island Mine has a creek). Most of the campsites are nice big clearings with constructed tent pads. You might not have trees in...

Re: Camp Grounds near Grand Portage
Another camping option that might be of interest is the Canadian provincial park that is literally just past the border crossing, just a couple miles past the turn-off for the ferry. This is closer than CR Magney in the morning. You do need passports, though, to get into Canada and back.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2015 edition
I spent my REI dividend on new socks. I have all kinds of gear that I am satisfied with, but socks do eventually wear out......

Invasive Species/washing canoes?
I thought I saw somewhere that, due to spread of invasive species, you can't take boats (including canoes and kayaks) from Lake Superior into inland waters on IsRo without either letting them dry for 5 days or cleaning them somehow. Does anyone know where I can confirm this regulation and practical ...

Re: Air Charter to island in week 1: where to buy fuel?
The ranger station at Windigo can fill your fuel bottle with white gas. I have seen them do this for hikers, pouring from 1-gal "coleman fuel" storage cans. If you have left-overs, you can probably donate it back to the gascan. I assume you pay the rangers by the ounce or something like th...
