Re: Yet another reason to take the Voyager/Sea Hunter
Try this drive at night--towing a trailer. Under these circumstances, I rate it as one of the worst I've done. Not quite as bad as MI 28 across the U.P., though. I have, many times, towing boats and in a semi and in the winter no less. There are far more challenging roads elsewhere. The road is muc...

Re: Voyageur Schedule Comprehension Troubles
Thanks for helping to clarify things. In the late season we go around the island only once per week, Wed'Thurs as stated. Back and forth from Grand Portage to Windigo on Saturdays and Sundays. The fall schedule is designed to hopefully minimize the impacts of rough weather by concentrating the traff...

Re: New look for Park Service Website
No panic, just irritated, not at the folks at I.R. though, rather the government web people after the park level. I received a call from the park regarding this and it was indeed technical as you indicated, they explained, appologised, and are contacting the other providers as well. It will help the...

Re: New look for Park Service Website
Coolest person in the world? Thanks but I think at least 99.999% percent of the earths' population would have to take issue with that statement. Richard, I did submit a message and was contacted by the park, thanks though. John, you're right, all of the service providers come up pretty well and have...

Re: New look for Park Service Website
I find it particularly interesting that virtually an entire page was devoted to the Ranger complete with links and complete info on the "Getting to the island wilderness" page and all the other transportation options are shoved to the right margin with tiny pictures, no links, no contact i...

Re: Wolf population is at risk (News article)
The notion that moose will destroy the island unless the more wolves are brought in now is absurd. Not to say that in a substantial period of years after the wolves' extiction the population of moose could rise significantly enough to cause damage. But this is nothing that is going to happen anytime...

Re: Wolf population is at risk (News article)
The wolf was removed from federal protection in Minnesota and other states this year after several tries from the MN DNR. The DNR feels they need to manage the wolf population rather than continuing protection, there have been lawsuits, debates, arguments, you name it, associated with the DNR's effo...

Re: Canoecopia in Madison March 9-11
Getting stuff ready to drive to Madison tomorrow morning. We will be at our fourth Canoecopia this year, our location on the floor plan is B9. For all those attending stop by and say hi, it would be great to meet some of the forum members.

Re: First Aid
There are actually many resources available depending on the severity of the situation. There is, for all intents and purposes, NO cell service on the island so remote communication is not that good. The best methods are other hikers in your group or the area that can go for help, there are trail cr...

Re: Feldtmann Lake fishing
The big northern from Feldtman that was mentioned was caught by my sister-in-law, it went over 20lbs. and is hanging on the wall. As far as this "ranger" using VHS as a reason for not catching fish, he is talking way out of turn. VHS has only been confirmed once in St. Louis Bay, (Duluth h...

Re: Lunch on the Voyager II
Ryden's Cafe closed for the season on Sept. 11th, a little earlier than normal this year due to some staffing shortages. The grill in the Trading Post is open from 7am to 7pm Friday through Sunday, but they have some c-store type junk if you want, the lounge in the Casino has great pizza, (way bette...

Re: Cultural Resources of Isle Royale
As I understand it, and this subject has been discussed amoungst the family, Isle Royale had no deeded properties. Technically, everyone that had buildings and resided on the island were squatters. Life leases were given in lieu of a payment, if you took the money you were basically selling the stru...

Re: The Wenonah still exists!
The day it sells! By the way, who shot the photos, and why? I may want to use them if I list the boat with a broker to assist in the sale if it would be OK.

Re: Any Food Drop Experience?
If you want a package delivered to Windigo or Rock Harbor it can go via US Mail, these are the only designated mail drops for visitors. Keep in mind that if you are not present to receive the package it will be left on the dock if you specify this, (technically, if it is US Mail we should return it ...

Re: Stove Fuel
What type of fuel do you need? If Coleman fuel will work, I have more than enough here and we could send it over on Monday's boat for you, take what you need and send the rest back. If it is something else, I may be able to find it in Grand Marais and bring it over to Windigo. Let me know what will ...
