Re: All I want for Christmas...

No problem, Hens. Actually, Fonix already took up a collection and had everyone from the forum contribute for your holiday gift. Unfortunately, when we went to buy a stamp to mail it to you, we couldn't afford the envelope. SO, we returned the stamp, and bought an envelope. Regretfully, we now canno...

All I want for Christmas...

It's the Santa's Watching post! Unfortunately, it's that slow forum time of year, and so what better way to hear from all of you than to ask for your opinions on what we all should be looking for under the Christmas tree. So, without further ado; I'd love to hear what each of you would like. Let's p...

Re: Paddling Inner Lakes, Sep. 10-16

You take amazing pictures of yourself... Seriously! :P Also, the black and whites turn out very well. I've tended to keep my canoe adventures to the MN Boundary waters and nearby areas... This report reminds me why one of these days I'm just going to have to take the energy to plan a water trip on IR.

Re: The web site hosting bill is due! Wanna help out?

If I see you dock at McCargoe or Siskiwit in your new 40' boat, you're inviting me aboard for a relaxing beverage! I'll second your comment, fonix, on the kindness and collaboration of IR campers. Sure, you get the rare occasional self-focused hiker, but I've never visited a place where the folks we...

Re: The web site hosting bill is due! Wanna help out?

Glad to help! Thanks for everything you've done.

Now... If the first time we meet on the Island, you're touring about in your brand new kevlar canoe with helium portage kit, well, we're going to have to talk...

Re: Kari and Wally trip report

Thanks for the report! It's a bummer Kari hasn't been able to see a moose; I'd especially think the chances are good on the Feldtman loop. Seems they're always around there. Oh well, next year just plan your trip for early June when the cows have calved, and then just hang out at Rock Harbor or Wind...

Re: Private property on IR?

So park users passing by are permitted to land? I really don't want to intrude but a resident dock might be a nice location for lunch or snack break. From my understanding, as long as they're there as VIP and not a leaseholder, yes. That being said, I don't think you'd find just about anyone out th...

Re: Private property on IR?

I believe that technically, all of Isle Royale (including surrounding Islands) is property of the US Gov't. When the National Park was finally established in the 1940s, after years of negotiation with the existing land owners, everyone was required to give up ownership their property. In turn, lifet...

A couple of notes - If you're planning on calling before heading to the ferry, in Minnesota place the call in Grand Marais. For whatever reason, once you get down to the parking area by the Voyageur II in Grand Portage, the vortex of evil sucks up cell calls. I could get a signal, but it would never...

I intentionally packed my cell phone last year, and kept trying it at multiple points for purposes of trying to determine if a cell phone reliably works. We hiked part of Minong, the Greenstone, and then the Rock Harbor Trail. I have Verizon service, and used my tri-mode phone which would have picke...
