Re: cell phones

I don't really find the "non commercial" nature of the amateur service that limiting. It's primarily common sense things and 'pecuniary interest.' Besides, folks here were talking about checking in with loved ones, not ordering a pizza.. Certainly, 6m during high solar activity is about as...

Re: cell phones

I think the caution that needs to be stated is that no matter what vendor, roaming plan, cell phone type, etc, phone service is spotty at best on Isle Royale and should not be relied upon as a reliable form of communication. I wouldn't promise a 'check in' with anyone that you'll be OK, but rather a...

Re: Boater/backpacker relations

Thanks for the correction, Mandolyn, as well as the history!

I can just recall this June that Jackie of the Superior Diver was going to go over an "check in on it" to make sure all was OK. They must be active with IRNHA as well as IRBA...

Re: Boater/backpacker relations

Along with Nitsirk and Capt Don are saying; I'd probably have to agree that it has NOTHING to do with mode of transportation and locomotion, but rather just differing personalities. In all my years, I've had ONE 'bad boater' experience; but can think of several 'bad camper' experiences. Just folks t...

Re: Looking for some good advice.

The VoyII arrives at RH at 15:00 CENTRAL (The boat stays in Central Time) whereas the Queen departs at 14:45 Eastern. You'll miss it by over an hour, so either way you'll be laid up at a camp for a day. The water taxis don't go past Chippewa (on the South) and McCargoe (on the North) from what I rec...

Re: Propane

Like DonNewcomb said, each stove (even of the same type) can burn at different rates, depending on a variety of factors, including altitude. The best thing to do is simulate making some meals (boil some water, for instance) to get an idea of the rate of fuel consumption. You MIGHT be able to find ou...

Re: Boater/backpacker relations

Never had a problem myself, but I have seen strained relations at Siskiwit bay over the two shelters. Wasn't about ten years ago, was it? It's my only "bad boater" experience. A buddy and I came off the trail from Windigo (via Island Mine, which we just kept hiking) and got caught in a ra...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)

Great TR so far, Kanonen! I look forward to the rest! A for the record, I personally love swimming in Superior. A boater this June commented, "You must be from Minnesota." "How did you know?" I asked. "Minnesotans are the only people who can just walk right in to Superior, l...

Re: Help with Itinerary

Hmmm. Half the fun is figuring out an intinerary!! The route posted by Don_P would give you lots of what the Island has to offer without a great deal of backtracking; however note that it's about 11 miles from RH to Moskey. (Not 7.8) Before making a recommendation, I'll ask this: What do you hope to...

Re: Boater/backpacker relations

I'd agree they've improved. The past several years when I've met boaters; they've been friendly and share the love of IR. They've also often shared their catch or a beer... So I must say, it seems to be good!

Re: Missing trail?

I'd be suprised to find sub-meter imagery for place as remote as IR; at least for the public. I'm not aware of any Pictometry flights or anything scheduled by the NPS. I did meet a guy this June who backcountried the hike; he tended to stick next to the bodies of water/shorelines and fished his way ...

Re: First timers attempting west to east traverse this October

More specifically, do any of you who have been there think it is worth the extra few miles to go along the Indian Portage trail from McCargoe Cove (instead of the shorter route back up to the Greenstone Ridge via East Chickenbone)? It does add about 2.4 miles, but as you said, you'll be walking alo...

Re: Boots

DonNewcomb - I guess it somewhat depends on when you go. I would probably think that the LL Bean Maine hiking boots would be too warm/sweat during most of the season. That being said, it's the type of boot I saw Rolf Peterson wearing this June on the boat, so who am I to argue.. The trails can be we...

Re: Compass for trail hiking

I'm like Scoutdad; I always carry one and recently have been using up some of my 'elective' weight with a GPS. That's only for the 'fun' factor, though. While I've never had a reason to NEED to pull a compass or GPS out (other than to check position on a map, perhaps), I'm just glad to know it's the...
