Re: Colorado and Out West
John, How did it work at Hanging Lake? Did you have reservations to hike up to Hanging Lake? Did you have to take a shuttle to the parking lot? I had heard that they had to make some adjustments to accommodate the popularity of Hanging Lake. It is naturally beautiful place! Pawnee Grasslands is off ...

Re: Colorado and Out West
Traffic sometimes as bad as Chicago, and backcountry sites and roads crowded. Just a month or so ago there was an hour-long backup to get in to RMNP and no parking once people did get in. Same with the 14ers. Inexperienced and unprepared people attempting to summit in the afternoon while storms are...

Re: Colorado and Out West
I moved to Colorado in December, and for the first time since 2016 I won't visit Isle Royale this year. But I have been exploring what Colorado has to offer! Tortuga, there is plenty to see and do in Colorado! Unfortunately, there are so many people moving to the state that many of the outdoor purs...

Re: Water filter
In my wanderings I have only used the Katadyn Pro Hiker with very good results. I am fortunate to have traveled to Isle Royale and some of the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Utah, so the sources have been relatively clear/clean. Lake Superior is some of the best water you will f...

Re: Mott Island trails
On a canoe trip a couple years ago I ended up staying at Caribou Island for a night. Caribou has two shelters and is a nice place to stay. While there I canoed to both Cemetery Island and Mott Island. It was worth it to see both islands and hike. I would include it on your trip While hiking the nort...

Re: Newbie Weekend Trip Input
+1Especially if you've just got one night on the island, the Windigo-based options kolo describes sound like a perfect way to get your feet wet and help you decide what you want more of on your next trip. (I feel like every trip to IR is partly scouting for the next one.)

Re: Newbie Weekend Trip Input
1. Climbing some mountains maybe Sugar or Desor. I am not trying to burst your bubble but these are not mountains in the sense that you are probably thinking. They are basically high points on the Greenstone Ridge. Much of the Greenstone is covered in trees and you would not have very good views on...

Re: First Time Trip Plan - Need Feedback/Advice
Your itinerary looks like a great trip! You are camping at some of the best places, especially Moskey Basin and Chippewa Harbor. The distances look doable, provided you are in decent backpacking shape. The first stretch from Windigo to South Lake Desor is a bit of a climb, but a mellow trail (surfac...

Re: data Minong
Back when I was physically able, I backpacked 3 mph on some of the easier stretches of the Greenstone. On the Minong, I was lucky to do 1.5 mph. Of course I wasn't racing and enjoyed the hiking. I camped at North Desor and didn't even think about bypassing it on my way to Windigo. It is a pleasant p...

Re: Canoe rental?
Sounds like you are arriving via the UP. If you were going through Grand Portage, I would highly recommend Bear Track Outfitters located in Grand Marais. They have been very good in renting what I needed on several canoe trips to the Isle.
