Re: Lake Trout for Dummies?

The main obstacle you face with Lake Trout is that they normally prefer deeper water. When experienced power boaters fish for Lake Trout they use down riggers. This is a heavy weight on a line separate from the fishing line, used to sink the lure to the desired level (sometimes 100 feet, especially ...

Re: Sawyer Squeeze @REI for $31

Has anyone ever heard of anyone getting tapeworm cysts from Isle Royale? They'd appear in your lungs some while (years?) later. On page 1 on this thread (in my same post referencing 1 minute) there are a couple of videos showing actual contaminations. I do not know of any occurring in Isle Royale v...

Re: Sawyer Squeeze @REI for $31

Park recommendations are either: 1) Rolling boil for 1 minute OR 2) Minimum of 0.4 micron filtering AND treatment for viruses. Only boiling or filtering will remove Tapeworm eggs (and most bacteria). Only boiling or chemical/UV treatment will kill viruses. At the orientation Sept. 9 at Windigo they...

I thank everyone for your kind words. Even with the given circumstances, this last trip was excellent. I hope to return next year with my son.

Re: 2013 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

My trip may be cancelled if the Gov't shuts down. Just heard yesterday. John, I hope not for your sake, but I believe that any shutdown will only last a day or two. It's too bad when politics gets involved in our daily life to this extent. Maybe in part it's because our daily life is not involved e...

Rock Harbor Base Camp (September 2 – 6, 2013)

Isle Royale Trip Report – Rock Harbor Base Camp (September 2 – 6, 2013) It had been 13 years since my last visit. This makes my 8th trip over 38 years. I lost my wife of 28 years in May and needed to get away. I could think of no better place to get some kind of piece of mind. My wife hated camping...

Re: Plastic particles in the Great Lakes

That's bizarre. I notice the Mining article or the Duluth one it linked to made no mention as to the concentrations found. One reference stated the Lake Erie nets contained 1.7 million particles (but per what measurement?). The other was that the Great Lakes were "filled" with the particle...

Re: IR Queen III crashes into rocks

Didn't mean to freak you out! No problem. I actually enjoyed the brief adrenaline rush. Between my beta blockers and naps, my heart doesn't get stirred often. Regarding remembering the Queen 3, I remember her when she was the Queen 2. This was before the Queen 3 had her hull extended by 20 feet or ...

Me too. fonixmunkee had me doing a double take for a couple of seconds  as I too will be on the Labor day (Monday) departure.

Hope to see you there.

Re: Zip Code for Isle Royal?

sitll confusing though. The island of Isle Royale National Park is indeed part of Michigan and more specifically part of Keweenaw County, therefore it would naturally be included in some Keweenaw zip code zone, but realities of commerce always win out. I think it's a classic case of "you can't...

Re: Zip Code for Isle Royal?

What is the postal zip code for Isle Royal? I think both of the previous replies are correct but there is actually a third option. You did not specify the purpose for needing the zip code. If you are not trying to send something directly to the Island or not wanting to know where Isle Royale reside...

Re: Filtering water 2 cents

For Isle Royale, the National Park Service does recommend both filtering for larger parasites such as the tapeworm egg and additional treatment for smaller things such as viruses that are much smaller than almost all filters (certainly portable filters). Or you can just boil instead, which takes car...

Re: Advice for living the dream in the big city of Rock Harb

A motorboat day or half day is in the plans. That is unless my solo canoe skills prove excellent  and the weather is too good to pass up. I would not think of soloing down Rock Harbor and back in one day. I actually plan to stick to Tobin Harbor with the canoe. With a motor boat though, I remem...

Most definitely. I'm hoping for night time wind and waves and daytime calm.

Any other words of advice will be warmly accepted.
