Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2016 Edition

Finally pulled the plug on a Marmot Precip jacket (although my dividend was only like $20).

Re: Water taxi to Hidden Lake Dock?

I'd strongly recommend reserving as soon as you know your intended route. At best you may not get as early a start as you want, quite possibly you may not be able to do your intended route day of. I did the same taxi last year and reserved EARLY and got out first boat in the AM. Sent from my iPhone ...

I rode out quite a gulley washer storm at Lane cove in mine last year.

You'll really like it. I also went with the #2 for a small bit more weight you get lots more room and an extra vestibule.

Re: Ranger Programs

Any clue which days they do the interpretive activities in June at Daisy and Rock? I'll be bringing my 9 year old twin boys with me this year and I know they'd love them, especially Candy's at Daisy Farm if possible. We'll be coming into Rock Harbor for 8 days and doing short miles for their first t...

Re: Ridge trail or loop???

If this is your only trip to the island I wouldn't worry about the entire greenstone (assuming that's what you mean by the ridge). I'd do a loop and enjoy some of the Lake Superior campgrounds. The 10 year old may enjoy an evening presentation at daisy farm. Perhaps take the long way between daisy f...

Re: Ways to improve the forums...

First off I think I speak for all in saying THANK YOU for all your work. It's a little home away from the island for me.... To answer your questions, I do use/subscribe to a couple of Isle Royale Facebook pages, this one would easily get attention from me also. I use my phone mostly to keep up and f...

Re: Favorite scenic view, spot, lookout

Mount Franklin will always be a favorite of mine. Also the reflective views off of Tobin Harbor and Lake Ritchie are very nice when the wind is gone and no ripples on the lake (usually first and last sun).

Re: [OFFICIAL] 2015 bug report

I wouldn't worry as much about sides of the island as staying more along the big lake. The bugs seem better along Superior with the breeze.

Re: Itinerary Suggestions

Options are plenty from Houghton.... Sea plane will drop you at either end of the island, but the west side trnds to have some days longer than 7 miles you mentioned. You could cross the island in 5 days or do a loop on either side (Windigo or Rock Harbor).... Ranger III will take you to Rock Harbor...

Re: Hammocks Inside of Shelters

Two things stick out. First the person was talking of putting points onto the Camps so they would hold. I'm pretty sure that would carve the beams/pillars up some. Secondly I agree that if your taking large scale c clamps wood blocks to protect the shelters and anything else to hang a hammock inside...

Hammocks Inside of Shelters

There are two types of Rangers on the island. The parks employee who gives the leave no trace talk or fills out your permit for you and then there's enforcement officers (The ones who carry a side arm). Enforcement officers can and do gift tickets for a variety of violations. While I don't know firs...

In fact, I was trying to think of a good way to add a small 'point" to the pads on the clamp to help with holding power :-)
That sounds like a fine waiting to happen to me. Why not just set up outside the shelter?
