Re: Anyone hear about this?
Fascinating stuff Moss. Thanks for sharing. And the following has nothing to do with humans getting attacked, but seems to fit here. From this week's Duluth Tribune. I know cougars in Minnesota aren't all that rare, but a pair hunting together seems off the mark. "Ted Kline and Ron Smith did wh...

Re: What does Barack mean for the environment?
One thing for sure, he'll do more for the environment than the Current Occupant has. And being that Chicago is a Great Lakes town must help. From his website: "The Great Lakes store one-fifth of the world's surface water, and Lake Michigan alone provides drinking water for an estimated six mill...

Re: Paddling Inner Lakes, Sep. 10-16
Hi John. We caught the walleye at Chickenbone fishing no differently than we were for pike, with Mepps spinners--I don't recall the colors, but they were numbers 4 or 5. With shorter canoes, we had less weight, so we thew lighter loose stuff in the boats. The rest of our stuff was in drybags mostly,...

Re: Malone Bay September 6th-14th
Nice trip report. Awesome pictures too--that is one fat northern. Great shot of that moose too. Like you, we watched some youtube video before leaving to hone up on our northern filleting/butchery. We were at Wood Lake on the Sunday of those gale winds and I knew you were in the general vicinity, wo...

Re: Wolves vs Moose Showdown
Awesome pictures. I did the same route just a few days earlier. What surprised me on the portages was the amount of wolf scat. Normally, when backpacking, I've seen so much moose tracks and poop, but this time signs for wolf far outnumbered those for moose. I didn't know if that is because we were i...

Re: Paddling Inner Lakes, Sep. 10-16
Here's a brief description of our portages: Day 1: none, stayed at McCargo. Day 2: .7 miles to Chickenbone. 3 or 4 hills, a couple right near the end. This was our longest, and I always say the first is the hardest. Day 3: .2 miles to Lake Livermore: rocky hill crossing the Greenstone, but this port...

Re: The web site hosting bill is due! Wanna help out?
I was conveniently on the island when the bill came due. However, I would like to add my thanks for what you've done with this thing. Not only has it been useful for trip planning, etc., but it keeps me going through the winter, and also gives me something to do at work. You didn't hesitate to set t...

Paddling Inner Lakes, Sep. 10-16
Pics are here: http://travel.webshots.com/album/567133245aVZsjU (The album is combined with a few shots of a recent Superior Hiking Trail trip with my dog). We (my father and I) drove up and ate awesome tacos in Grand Marais, then stayed at Ryden's for the first time and I still can't get over the p...

Re: Kari and Wally trip report
Awesome trip report. Thanks for sharing. I think that loop is one of the best on the island, but I haven't seen everything on the island either. Ingo, we might have been on the same boat, because I met a guy carrying a bike across too, doing a cross country trip. I told him taking the boat was cheat...

Re: food help on first trip
den_tyne, you're right about the taste of the astronaut food. I couldn't even think about eating one in the comfort of my home, but after a hard day of packing, that chicken and rice Propack tastes just as good (not better) than Grandma used to make it. I guess it's all relative.

Re: food help on first trip
Great ideas, Keweenaw. There's also some great info for easy meals at http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/ For the MountainHouse meals, I like their Propacks. They're a bit smaller, but they seem to fit in a pack a lot easier too. I might bring one or two of those double serve meals for the higher mile...

Re: Snakes.....
Okay, I'll bite. We were sitting at North Lake Desor, eating our dinner, my son barefoot on the rocks, when he just about jumped through the trees, or into the lake. A garter snake was crawling towards his feet. I grew up around water moccasins, so I understand what aggressive means when describing ...

What a great trip. You've planned a wonderful loop. We did the same when my son was younger. I recommend, if you have the time, to take at least one day that you're not traveling from camp to camp--Siskiwit Bay would be great for this. Let them hunt berries, swim, take a nap, explore the creeks, wha...
