Re: Best stove for new backpacker

I have a bit of a stove fetish. I own most of the stoves from REI and quite a few others. I carry a pocket rocket for my backup when I solo backpack. My primary stove is the jet boil. it's nice because of it's efficiency, but honestly I only bought it because that year's camping budget had extra mon...

Re: Solo Hike

Welcome to the forums. Just to clarify, are you and experienced hiker and backpacker? Most of my hikes on the island are solo. During mid July to early August you wont be alone. You will have time to yourself, but there will still be plenty of people around on most of the trails. My biggest concern ...

Re: Trip Help

How long do you plan on staying? Early June can still be cold with some snow on the ground. Late June-early July starts bug season. Consider staying on the boat and going to the east end of the Isle. The west end has some long days after the first day. Then you are in the middle of no where and have...

Re: Itinerary Review

This is not a trip that I would like, but if you like miles, go for it. I will stress johnhens "good shape". The average person would be in pretty bad shape trying to get those miles in, particularly if your plane is waiting at the end. For me, much of the difficulty of the island is the l...

Re: First timer

All of dcclark's suggestions are good. My old standby is #1 it's a nice hike. not to much, not to little. If you can get the plane early out and late back you could also consider: 1. fly to windigo> S Lake desor 2. Desor > W chickenbone 3. W chickenbone > Daisy 4. Daisy > Rock Harbor 5. hang at Rock...

Re: Luxury item

I laughed at my friends for taking a helinox chair zero because it is an unnecessary one pound. I was trying to get comfortable sitting on the dock last year while reading a book when a fellow kayaker pulled his chair out and offered it to me. I now carry one. Crow doesn't taste bad when you're comf...

Re: Logistics- Rock Harbor to Windigo- How do you get back to Rock Harbor to catch boat

Consider the seaplane both ways. You can schedule an early departure and a late return. Effectively giving yourself two extra days on the island. after the price of a Ranger III ticket you will pay 230 more. The plane will drop off on one end and pick up on the other for the same fare.

Re: Stove canisters and weight

I carry two for three reasons. One for possible leaks. Two because I usually use slightly less that one can. If I had one I would have to carry a big can for a shorter trip to use it up. Three it's easier to pack the smaller cans.

time for a boat

This is a bit of an odd topic and perhaps not in the right location, but I am looking for input from those who may know. I am looking to buy a boat to sail around the island. I am trying to solve a couple of problems. 1. I want sail power not engine for most of the trip. 2. I am based in Ann Arbor. ...

Re: Carrying Water

I'll touch on a few points. Most campsites are within seconds or a minute or two of the water source. I use the sawyer filter exclusively now. I filter one liter at the dock and refill my two liter container with dirty water to take back to camp. Three liters is enough to get me through dinner and b...

Re: End-to-end loop trip - itinerary feedback

Back up, pans, rest day, alternatives... Looks like a solid plan to me. Your days are longish, but not something this old man hasn't done before, and you know what to expect. Minong is done in the "easy" direction with the N. Desor to Windigo section with any empty pack. Moskey to Rock can...

Coasters aka brook trout are still catch and release on Isle Royale and the Lake Superior water within 4.5 miles from shore.

I tend to be a little prone to motion sickness myself. I take a Dramamine either way. I don't mind getting a little nap on the way out.
