Re: Backpacking Lunch

Typical lunches for me would include: - pb crackers, cheddar cheese, summer sausage - 3 oz salmon packet & handfull of triscuits - ham sandwich & cheetos (first day on the trail) Besides the above, I usually reserve 16 oz of water in my bottle (separate from my hydration bladder) for lunch....

Re: Planned Itinerary for July/ August 2010, thoughts?

Pushing too much? I don't think so. This is a great hike, challenging but entirely doable! The big difference for most people that walk a lot is that here you will be hiking on consecutive days. You've done a bit of the NCT, but if your son hasn't it might be wise to do a shakedown weekend hike to m...

Re: Voyageur II Logistics - Pick Up

As you say, I've heard of weather issues forcing delays for all the island boats. My friends and I used the phrase "Island Time" when referring to schedules. Things will go as planned unless something forces a change ... usually weather. I've ridden on the Voyageur several times, and the o...

Re: Backpacking Hammocks

Has anyone used backpacking hammocks on IR and if so, is there anything I need to consider when doing so other then just the standard hammock stuff (colder underside, tarps, etc)? I just want to make sure that if we take them that there will be places and trees to erect them at the various campsite...

Re: first Itinerary questions for 2010

This looks like a great trip! > Day 1 Rock Island to Hidden Lake, Hidden Lake to Lane Cove 8.2 miles Very doable, I'd book a water taxi ride to Hidden Lake for a lift after you arrive on the Queen IV. I've made reservations in the past in March or April, and never had an issue. Don't know if this is...

Re: first Itinerary questions for 2010

Jack, we need some more information about your plans! 1) How many are in your group? Your itinerary will not work if you are a group (more than 6). 2) Anyone in your group ever been to the island? 3) What ages/condition are the boys? The adults? 4) Mileage looks doable, but I agree with Ingo that th...

Re: 2010 Trip Transportaiton Planning

Hi yukonjack2, Looks like the Sandy sight-seeing tour leaves Rock Harbor on Tues. and Thurs. mornings, which may not be the most convenient. The water taxi is more flexible as it can be reserved in advance to your schedule (if not already booked), but it is limited to a maximum of 6 people at a time...

Re: cell phones

On Sept. 1st I hiked out to the tip of Scoville Point, where two young ladies were sitting. I heard one of them saying "Guess where I am?" and I realized they were using a cell phone. When I asked if they were getting cell signal, one of them smiled and said "I have two bars here!&quo...

Re: How are the bugs now and in first week of Sept?

Well, I just got back from a beautiful week on the island, but I have to say the reports of mosquito demise are greatly exaggerated! Probably due to the big rainstorm at the end of August, followed by warm temperatures. They were less numerous than in July (one or two at a time rather than a dozen o...

Thanks for the input!

That's good news! It is always much more pleasant to be able to sit around camp in the evening without bugs forcing us to cover up with netting!

How are the bugs now and in first week of Sept?

Anyone returned from the island recently? It has been a farily cool summer ... has that kept numbers down? I usually go in July (when mosquitos are fierce), but my schedule opened up and I can make a second trip up the first week of September this year. From what I've seen in past trip reports it so...
