Here's one taken last week on Porter Island, located in the far NE part of Tobin Harbor.

Broken Leg Night Rescue
We just got back today from spending five days on the island. Somebody at some interior campground (not sure which), broke their leg Sunday afternoon/evening (August 28th). I was down at Tobin Harbor about 9:00 PM and saw/heard a helicopter come in from the north. It was hovering well southwest of u...

Me too. We were out west back in May and that $10.00 senior pass saved me a bundle at both Zion and the Grand Canyon.Midwest Ed wrote:As an newly minted old fart with a brand new $10 senior lifetime NPS pass, I have to say that old age is starting to pay off.

Re: Yet Another Itinerary Question - kayaking to Merrrit Lane
Having paddled this stretch of water many times, I'll just second what everybody else has said, it all depends on the weather. But once you're in the Merritt Lane area, paddling is great. Waves aren't an issue and all of the small islands are great places to explore. You can also explore some of the...

Re: Thar she blows!
Very cool! I can only imagine the amazement of anybody walking down the Rock Harbor trail seeing this old schooner docked at Mott Island.

Re: How to get to the island in October?
The last scheduled public ferry from the Island this year is Thursday, October 6th. I wonder what it takes to hitch a ride home on the Ranger III during late season when they are closing down operations. I know people have done it. Just a few years ago (2012?), the Park Service was taking a limited...

Watching several people play croquet on the lawn just outside of Rock Harbor Lodge.

Re: Forecast accuracy
The Park Service usually posts a written weather report just outside the visitor’s center. It's updated daily. I worked with a gal, year’s back, who was frequently on Isle Royale until the park closed late in the fall (as I recall, her husband was the maintenance supervisor). She told me more than o...

Re: LABOR DAY WEEK
I stayed at the Washington Harbor campground after Labor Day for a few days back in 2014. The camp store was open with regular hours. As for crowds, they drop-off big time after Labor Day. We had our pick of shelters, probably 90% of them were vacant during the time we were there.

Re: Washington Creek Rain Event Levels
Most of the shelters at Washington Creek are a good 4' above the noraml creek level. If the amount of water indicated (ie 97%) is a measure of the normal level, wouldn't that mean the water is twice as deep as "normal"? It would be cool to see the level. I’m not sure the number of the she...

Re: Best canoe route from Siskiwit to RH?
........Should I risk the open water and paddle the big lake from Malone? Or should I stick to the inland route with lots of portaging? ......... From somebody who has kayaked extensively around Isle Royale over the past 25+ years, take the inland lake route from Siskiwit Lake to Rock Harbor. You d...

Re: elementary juneberry question
This was many years ago, but we found the world’s best Juneberry bush just off the trail that leads from the Malone Bay campground to Siskiwit Lake. We easily filled two quart containers in about 10 minutes. This was in the last week of August (maybe they should call it Augustberry instead?).

Re: Bugs
I was there last year during the the last week of May (Rock Harbor area) and there were no bugs at all anywhere near Lake Superior. Away from the Lake, both mosquitoes and black flies were starting to pop. The black flies were truly annoying in one spot I stopped at. I suspect early June will be the...

What I find most interesting about this article is that they've been finding dead deer washed up on the shore of the island for years. Deer on the island would change everything.
