Re: Rangers with guns
I live in Michigan and in it is legal to open carry while you are in the woods or other areas. There are local ordinances prohibiting it in many municipalities. Not legal to carry concealed or open in governmental buildings, airports, etc. CPL holders may carry anywhere in accordance with the restri...

Re: Rangers with guns
I believe that they are Park Police, the same as you would find on the National Mall in Washington DC. They are actually federal law enforcement agents. Most federal agencies have a law enforcement arm, Forest Service, ATF, EPA, etc. All National Parks have their quota of Park Police. They are not e...

Re: End of May trip
Where we live, between Munising and Marquette, MI the mosquitoes are really terrible. Since IR is about 100 miles north of here I expect June through July will be pretty intense. When we were on IR in late May, there were basically no bugs, especially on the NE end of the island. When we got home on...

Re: Kayak trip to NE of IR.
We are back now, got home around midnight Monday or I guess it was actually Tuesday. We had an outstanding trip, only one half a weather day. No real problems at Blake Point . We spent four days on the north side going as far as McCargoe and four days on the Rock Harbor side going as far as Moskey B...

Kayak trip to NE of IR.
Well, it looks as if this trip will happen. We leave for Copper Harbor tomorrow. We will take the Queen to Rock Harbor for what turns out to be her first crossing of the year. The weather forecast looks favorable this year, so I think that we will be able to make it to McCargoe, Belle Isle, Five Fin...

Re: Superior still mostly ice
Spring breakup has indeed come to the North Country. I live east of Marquette, MI and we have melted 16" of snow in the last six days. I just went out and measured it at my post that I use as a gauge. After last Fridays storm I could only see two inches of this post. Two weeks ago the snow was ...

Re: Gps recomendations
The GPSMAP 60CSx comes with a crappy stylized base map. The only thing that you can say for it is that is better than nothing. It is best to buy the add on topographic maps to load into the gps unit. The add on map is what makes this unit shine. Some people like the DeLorme units. Might pay to shop ...

Re: Gps recomendations
I also use a Garmin, a GPSMAP 60CSx. I use it both for hiking and kayaking. Mine is very waterproof as it has been in Lake Superior many times for brief periods. I keep it on a lanyard clipped to a deck line, but it ends up in the drink about every other trip on the water. Older unit now, but still ...

Re: Mid-May Trip
We were on the island for five days last year starting on 24 May and we liked it a lot. We plan to go back this year for the third week of May. When we got there last year, there were some patches of snow in protected spots. This did not bother us too much as we are primarily kayakers and only do da...
