Re: June 2020 Itinerary Review

The hike into Hatchet Lake is not really that different from the hike into West Chickenbone or South Lake Desor, and a little easier than the hike into Island Mine. The main Greenstone Ridge Trail is just that, a RIDGE trail and all of the campgrounds are down on lakeshores (or creek at Island Mine)...

"RH-Moskey 11 mi. Moskey-McCargo 8.4 --- you can (and should!) tack on a side trip of a few miles to the mine. McCargo to 3M 12.6. 3M to RH 2.7 -- then grab a shelter and spend the bulk of the day exploring Scoville Point or doing the canoe/hike to Lookout Louise and back. RH and out" This...

Re: What Food Is Best?

On the other hand, I seldom use pre-packaged food and most of my backpacking food is made at home and dehydrated at home. Your trip is going to be somewhere between four and seven days. Can you come up with three dinners, and have each one once or twice? And can you have the same breakfast each day?...

Re: June 2020 Itinerary Review

I like the pipedream itinerary the best. You may find the lower daily mileage gives you a more relaxing trip, with more time to explore and relax. You have a great option your next-to-last night, skip past South Desor and stay at IslandMine where campfires are allowed at the provided fire rings. Thi...

And any park’s website is www.nps.gov/IsRo or /voya, /grca, /yose, and so on. Same 4 letters.

Re: What interior lakes would you take in a packraft to fish on?

You could be at Malone fairly quickly if you took the seaplane in the afternoon and hopped the Voyager ferry in the morning, as it gets to Malone Bay around 11 am. This would be a lot less expensive than the water taxi, which is posted as $289 one way RH to Malone Bay. I wonder if there are any priv...

Re: Portage from Lake Whittlesey to Wood Lake

When are you thinking? Because next summer I hope to pick up the pieces of the route I planned for last summer and finish it off after several days getting there, with Malone Bay to Chippewa Harbor. I will be paddling and portaging my kayak but I am also adept at portaging lighter canoes. If the sch...

Re: What interior lakes would you take in a packraft to fish on?

But remember, Malone Bay is a flagstop for the Voyager ferry. Just have to allow the travel time to match her route. The first ferry is usually sometime around the second week of May.

The America dock also sustained a lot of damage by ice in the past 2 winters, so it was not at its best to withstand the storm.

Re: Most photographic areas for Astro/Landscape/Wildlife Photography

They were a harmless-looking 60-something couple, I assume husband and wife, who did not know the rules about backcountry camping. I do not know whether they actually had a cross-country permit (in which case they should have known about the “red zone” for the entire Rock Harbor area) or whether the...

Re: Most photographic areas for Astro/Landscape/Wildlife Photography

Laughing here, after reading Ingo’s comment about dawn at Scoville Point. While on The Island this August, I met a couple canoers who were very proud that they had a “backcountry” permit and could thus camp “anywhere”. They were arriving into Snug Harbor very early one morning from an odd direction,...

My first trip to Isle Royale was in late September. Island Mine was absolutely gorgeous at that time of year! But the nights were very cold.

Re: Solo Hike

There are several people who have hiked a similar trip in the past few months. If you go to the “Trails and Campsites” forum, and look for the discussions of end-to-end loop hike, you will find a lot that might help your planning.

Re: Best stove for new backpacker

is there any way to stop this addiction
What worked for me was downsizing my home. I had to select only the best of my gear to keep, and sold or donated the rest. Funny, I am finally satisfied with my gear collection 😀
