Re: Gaia GPS for smartphones

Thanks for some of the replies. All good info and I've shared many of your concerns Tom. Out of curiosity, what middle Delorme GPS do you have? I've been debating one of the satellite messengers, which is making me reconsider my electronics. I know you can pair them with a phone for easy texting com...

Re: Backcountry zone 27

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hoping to be able to push on, however I wanted to have a back up plan.

Gaia GPS for smartphones

Hey all, Does anyone have any experience with Gaia GPS app? I know some people swear by it, but I've been hesitant to use/buy it. I've always used a dedicated GPS (Gamin 60 CSX) which has served me very well. What are your thoughts on its performance versus a dedicated GPS unit? What kind of battery...

Re: Possible Itinerary and Dates - Feedback?

Thanks for your replies. This is super helpful! I'll keep thinking about the sea plane. If we build in a layover day it would give some more flexibility (although I'm sure we'd be a bit frustrated if we are delayed a day). I'm just a bit leery of the boat for the sickness reasons. I think I've read...

Re: Possible Itinerary and Dates - Feedback?

Hi there a couple random thoughts for you.... I'm pretty familiar with the east end of the island, Rock => Moskey is ambitious for the 1st day but doable. For me personally it takes a couple days for me to get my "Trail Legs" under me. I've done Moskey to Rock before, but at the end of the...

Backcountry zone 27

Hello all, I was curious if anyone has gone back country for zone 27, particularly if you get bad weather or tired hiking into Malone Bay. I see that Zone 27 is closed the majority of the year, but is open within 1/4 mile of Siskiwit which is what I'd be doing. I'm taking my 11 year old twins this y...

Re: Camping

I have a love/hate relationship with Lane Cove. It was the very first campground I stayed in and a beautiful campground (loves). It seems the last couple years it's been increasing in popularity significantly and a place many stroll into late in the day (especially with very novice hikers) expecting...

Re: Bug updates?

Just got off the boat hours ago. A black fly or two but really non existent yet. Skeeters were increasing on warmer days and in wooded areas. I'd expect a breakout soon.

Bug updates?

Hey all. Heading to the island on Friday 6/10. This will be my 7th trip but my 9 year old twin boys first trip! 9 days 8 nights for us. I was curious of any bug updates.

Thanks
Andy

Re: Seaplane

No. You can't take Ido butane canisters on the plane. Sea plane is fantastic when not delayed. I took it twice and had no issues, fogged in and lost two days of my trip (before finally getting on the boat) last time I tried. I'd still take the plane just understand it's more prone to delays than the...

Average daily/monthly attendance

Hey all, I'm going to the island the 2nd full week of June this year. I got a killer deal via the Ranger III for myself and both 9 year olds ($145 for round trip including daily user fees) but the dates were pretty well locked. I've never been that time of year. I've been slightly later in June twic...
