My understanding is that they get one supply of frozen foods each year and aim to sell out before they close down for the winter.

Bummer. Sandwiches were a welcome treat after several days on the trail. Do they sill sell ice cream?

But the store will make sandwiches and serve soft drinks (and sometimes ice cream) which you can eat on the porch.

Really heavy foil can be used as a windscreen for your stove.

Re: Drop off

You have a couple of options: ..... 2) Make arrangements with the folks that run the Voyageur II and have them deliver the package in Windido (basically the same option as #1, but without the use of USPS). The downside of both options is that you have to be at the dock when the package arrives by b...

Re: A couple quick questions (toilet paper and showers)

Yes, from my research I have found you can in fact store gear (no fuel) at Rock harbor. There are not lockers available, but they do offer a storage for a fee..... We stored a suitcase at the RH Lodge office while we hiked for 9 days and picked it up when we checked into the Lodge for the last nigh...

Re: First time back country camper. What to bring to Isle Royale?

I didn't notice a sleeping pad or rainwear on your list. As others have mentioned, MREs are heavy because the RE part means "ready to eat". When you pack MRSs you're packing a lot of water. P.S. If you do bring MREs, you should probably break them down first to get rid of a lot of the pack...

Re: Arrival, Ranger III and other questions

We got our backcountry permit from the ranger on the boat. However, he was more interested in entertaining the visitors and just signed what we gave him, which said that we'd be in certain zones during our 10-day stay. Only at the end of the trip was over did we learn that backcountry permits are su...

Re: A couple quick questions (toilet paper and showers)

I've used the shower at Windigo but not at Rock Harbor. The shower at Windigo was hot and quick. Plenty of time if you're used to taking navy showers. They didn't include soap or towel and I didn't ask because I carry a pack towel and liquid camping soap. I can't imagine you're really planning on ca...

Re: Campground in Grand Portage

My understanding is that the reservation tried to have a tower (one that they would own) installed, but the big companies don't want to share the revenue that is generated by such a tower. A tower, they can own, and lease space to the wireless companies. If they were thinking of their own cellular ...

As a make your own, I've found these indispensable: https://www.rei.com/product/696007/coghlans-squeeze-tubes-package-of-2. I fill one with PB and the other with Nutella, and place in a zip lock bag with tortillas and a small bottle of honey (or mix in the same tube). These are always packed in a s...

Re: Campground in Grand Portage

In Sept. 2016, the Grand Portage Casino told me that the recently installed cell service in Grand Portage is AT&T. My T-Mobile phone did not work, and would not roam to AT&T. "Recently installed" would explain why Grand Portage is shown on AT&T's maps but crowd-sourced maps li...

Cell service in Grand Portage?

Mostly out of curiosity, do any cellular phone companies cover Grand Portage? I've looked at AT&T's maps that claim to but then I've seen other maps that say, not. Verizon does not claim to cover Grand Portage? Does your phone stop working when you get there?

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

Thanks for all the replies - that really helps in deciding water shoes vs. flip flops for campsites. For me, it's a trade-off between weight and function. Flip-flops (a.k.a. slaps) are light weight but almost non-functional. Crocs weigh about 8 oz but can function as camp shoes and water shoes for ...
