Check this out:
Manistee River Trail.

On both ends the trail connects to the North Country so you can do a loop. I last did it in 2008 or 2009. I was my youngest son's very first backpacking trip.

I spent a few years at DaTech and that's the go to place for breakfast. If you are lucky they might have pasties ready and you can take one with you to eat on the boat ride over for lunch.

Re: experience with esbit stoves?
https://emberlit.com/stoves I have seen some good reviews on these stoves, they come with a "removable shelf" to use with the Esbit tabs. I am going to try one. In any case I always bring Esbit tabs with me no matter how I am cooking. They also make excellent fire starters in a pinch and y...

I like it better. I usually go for a week or longer and go with my kid, so it would be cheaper just to get the yearly pass.

Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like to?
Id like to visit all the National Parks and Monuments in Utah and Nevada. Bryce, Canyon Lands, Arches, Great Basin. I was supposed to go to Death Valley last march but had to cancel, missed a mega desert flower bloom (not sure exactly what it is called) that occurs only every 10 years or so. I cover...

Re: Shelter Dimension
Rough sawn is usually exact not a 1/2" smaller.
But someone should really just measure it for the guy.
My guess is a total of 4" - from the picture those look like actual rough sawn.

Re: Solo Trip report 5/24/16-5/31/16
I just picked up a pair of Gore GoreTex bicycle socks. I put them on and put my feet in a basin of water for 30 minutes and my feet were dry. They will go on my next trip, along with my blister prevention treatment kit that I just put together. Definitely test those out before you get to the island...

My first year of college at Michigan Tech in Houghton was the winter of '79.
Every winter after that didn't seem like much of a big deal

Re: Good Backpacks (HELP)!
I went from an old external frame REI cruiser to a ULA internal frame pack.
I absolutely love it and you can order different sizes in packs and belts to match your shape.

Very customer service friendly as well.

Michigan is also blessed with over 100 State Forest Campgrouns, they are rustic, and cheaper than the state parks. That is also an option to check.

Re: Early bugs, spring 2010
Today, I made motel reservations in Copper Harbor for our trip to the island next month. The proprietor said that the black flies, which normally are the plague in early June, are out already! She was saying that in June, they normally only last two weeks and if that held for this early in the spri...
