Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem
Sounds to me like the best possible solution :D . I have an HX300 and have had pretty good luck getting weather forecasts. Sometimes on the north side only Thunder Bay comes in decent so know some basic conversions, eg meters/seconds for wind and meters for waves. I love all the boat in sites. You k...

Re: West end spring trip
I did the loop the end of May a few yrs ago and trails were very wet and muddy. Very thankful I decided to bring high gaiters, which helped keep water out of the boots. Lots of mud holes over the toes and a couple of spots with water higher than the ankles. Trekking poles were also my dear friend na...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Thanks for the report. I did the Feldtmann loop a few years back at the same time of year, and it was also rather wet and cold, but still a great trip. Did you seen any moose at Feldtmann? They were all over the campground and in the lake that year. I also appreciate the nervousness of getting picke...

Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem
There's a few, but not a lot of power boaters on this forum, so don't know how much feedback you'll get. But I understand there's an Isle Royale boaters group on Facebook you may want to pose the question to. I do know that if you rent a boat from the lodge that you'll be limited to Rock Harbor and ...

Re: Looking for a specific ISRO map
Sounds like a long shot, but if it does exist, it's probably buried on an NPS server. I did a cursory search here and didn't find anything, but it may be somewhere if you're motivated to dig into it ... https://www.nps.gov/subjects/gisandmapping/tools-and-data.htm You could also try calling and/or e...

Re: Trip planning
I think you could make both Todd H and Chippewa H with 8 days, but it all depends on your daily mileage, of course. Choosing between them would be tough for me, so I'll call it arbitrary, but they're both great if you can hit them both. Hatchet is fine, but not esp special, although a possible stop ...

Re: Accessible Camping
Mud holes depend on the depth. Which all depends on the weather, of course. On the whole, things tend to be wetter/muddier earlier in the season from the snow melt. When I was at Windigo a few years ago in June, there were a couple of large nasty ones in the campground, but I would hope (and presum...

Re: Accessible Camping
It's certainly doable if you take the Ranger III out of Houghton and stay at the lodge or housekeeping cabins in Rock Harbor. Beyond that it gets complicated quickly. The trail to the Rock Harbor campground from the dock is like a small gravel road, at least to the shelters, but the trail to tent si...

I always bring one regardless of month, although maybe used it once. But it's an ounce (literally) of insurance if you hit a hatch.

Re: New Webcam
What are the lights on each side at the horizon? They show up consistently each morning. My first thought was Mott Island on the left, but it doesn't seem feasible when I look at the map. I'm at a total loss on the right. Guessing they're towers on the mainland. You can see IR from Mt Brockway in C...

Re: Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor in one day
Heck yes, I'd do Huginnin, too! Should've thought of that! Beautiful spot. I can see how some may say the hike is not as scenic, but to me the campground makes up for that. Likely a lot fewer folks and will feel much more remote. And with only 1 night, I would take as much time on the island as I co...

Re: Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor in one day
Even though there isn't any elevation gain, there are a lot of small ups and downs that add up, but more importantly, very rocky, roots, and poor footing in many (most) places. I doubt you could make Chippewa by dark this time of year. I would suggest Daisy Farm (7 mi), enjoy the evening, and get pi...
