Re: Trip Report: Aug 6-13, 2020

Thanks so much for posting your report - and video. It brought back fond memories from many, many moons ago - seaplane from Houghton, Huginnin Cove, Feldtmann Lk, Rainbow Cove, Siskiwit Bay. It wasn't raining, but we still got soaked from the waist down on the trail where you can't see your feet - b...

Re: Beginner trip for 12 and 9 year old boys

I first took our son to IRNP when he was 9; he’s mid 40’s now. We had a great experience the first time and have had many more since then. I would add: - The first priority is to stay warm, dry, fed & hydrated. It can get cold at night even in August. So it’s important to always have dry clothes...

Re: Water Taxi Reservations?

Last May, I made a water taxi reservation for next month. You do have the correct phone number. But there's limited phone service to the island so you have to keep trying; especially during peak season (Now through August). I've sometimes found that if you just keep pressing "redial" on yo...

Coaster Brook Trout Fishing

This week's episode of "Michigan Out of Doors" has a segment on fishing for Coaster Brook Trout on Isle Royale. It's the first 14 minutes of the show.

I'm not a fisherman, but I still found it interesting.

Thanks for making time to share your trip report on the forum. Well done. I enjoyed reading it.

Kudos to your dad for a well-planned trip. I'm glad that you enjoyed the island.

Thanks so much for your report. Your keen sense for the not-so-obvious makes your TR's fun and informative. They help my vocabulary too. I'll try to use "scarpered" in a sentence at the first opportunity!

Re: Input/Feedback Needed!

I don't believe that your plan to take the Voyageur II will work. For reasons that I've never understood, the Ranger III does not connect easily to the Voyageur II for transportation down the island. If you arrive in RH on the Ranger III on Tuesday afternoon, the Voyageur II doesn't leave RH until T...

Re: First Timer perhaps 1st week of June 2019

You probably already know this, but since no one mentioned it, I will add that the first week of June can be COLD. If there's wind off of Lake Superior, it feels colder. Some of us septuagenarians get cold quicker than we used to. There's a weather forecast, but it often changes after you're out the...

Thanks for the trip report! I enjoyed reading about your trip and seeing your photos. Well done! I was wondering if you got confirmation of the Trumpeter Swan sighting. The latest NPS bird list for IRNP (https://irma.nps.gov/NPSpecies/Search/SpeciesList) indicates that there's never been a confirmed...

Re: First trip advice - staying at RH for 3 nights late Aug

One person mentioned seeing a few at Lake Ojibway. I was on the Ranger III this past June when Rolf Peterson was asked to give an update on the wolf-moose situation. He used Lake Ojibway as an example of how moose can affect the vegetation. He said that a while back, Lake Ojibway had become lush wi...

Re: First timer - wondering how difficulty compares to Jordan River Valley in L.P.?

Rookie, Welcome to the forum! I've backpacked the Jordan River loop several times and all the Isle Royale trails that you list. You will absolutely love Isle Royale. In my opinion, you'll find the trails on Isle Royale more rugged; more rocks, roots and up & down. If it rains, the IRNP trails ca...

Re: The Case of the Shrinking Moose

The current issue of "National Parks" magazine (Summer, 2018) has a letter to the editor that provides a counterpoint to the article in the previous edition (Spring, 2018) regarding the shrinking moose on Isle Royale. The letter reads: "The article on the size reduction of moose in Is...
