This webcam loop is from Canada, not far from Slate Island.

Re: First Time Visit: 8/24/10 - 9/1/10

The adage of watching the ounces to control the pounds really is accurate. Trimming an ounce or two from several items will begin to save you 2 or 3 pounds. Your camp shoes (as you’ve already noted) are obvious targets. I use moccasins without hard soles. After a break-in period, the leather soles h...

There are one too many sets of the IMG tags. You can edit the post to remove them.

Re: HELP: Trip Planning (First Timer)

Welcome to the forum Scotty. I highly recommend some practice with a loaded pack. Hiking with substantial weight on your back is a very different experience, as is camping limited to using just those things that you can carry. But the freedom born from doing both at the same time can be exhilarating...

Re: First Time Visit: 8/24/10 - 9/1/10

Is there a way to insert a jpeg (about 1500 Kb) in a post? There are a couple of ways to do it. The one I use relies on the fact that I have already posted or uploaded my photos to another website on the internet. It can be anywhere, but I use a couple of the free commercial photo hosting sites lik...

Re: First Time Visit: 8/24/10 - 9/1/10

Bob, Congratulations on what sounds like a great trip. I think you did great for your first time out, tremendously better than I did. You’ve already learned the lesson of not starting out too fast, stopping sooner to apply that moleskin before trouble strikes. Keep at it and you will find the groove...

Re: Sept 2010 - 6 Days and 5 Nights - Windigo to Malone Bay

Very interesting trip. I’ve always considered the shorter days and cooler temps to be a wonderful trade off in order to get rid of the bugs. I am interested in your cross country stretch. It sounds as if you had preplanned waypoints recorded. In the valley just south of Minong there appears to be tw...

Re: August 2010 Trip Report

Congratulations to you all for an excursion well done and a very nice report. It’s those times that “test your metal” that can be most satisfying. Excursions with a few hard knocks thrown in are the ones that become the most memorable. Thanks for sharing both the ups and downs . You have just scratc...

Re: Windigo Store

I was impressed with how fast it was. I don't know if it would be fast enough for VOIP. I'm fairly certain it was cellular-based as there was a small 5 or 6 element yagi on their tower directed towards the Grand Portage/Grand Marais area. Based on the descriptions it sounds like a point to point Wi...

Just when we thought it was the only Zebra mussel. . .

that deserved our fear and outrage. Along comes this report of a new species introduced that seems to pose far greater danger. http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2010/september/story31190.html This story about the Quagga mussel looms ominous. Although the story focuses on southern Lake Michigan, it cla...
