Re: Helo on Mott Dock?!?

They are moving pallets that have been sitting there since last October.

Possibly some pallets of appropriate food storage bins that came in from NPS stock?

Makes sense that they're the new food storage lockers for the campgrounds. And that they'd try to get them at least to the CGs before ...

Re: Long Weekend Loop Midwest

Sylvania Wilderness is a possibility, have heard it's great for canoeing at least. From the trail map it doesn't look like many loop options, though.

Re: Trekking Pole Tents

I have a 2-person double wall trekking pole TarpTent, but they didn't make my model for long. Works great as my single tent. At 37 oz it's lighter than their current equivalent. One thing I appreciate about the trekking pole design is it's easy to adjust the height of the fly higher for ventilation ...

Re: 2025 New Gear

In the spirit of the old "what are you spending your REI dividend on?" threads, and given the new food regs, I'm thinking this won't help much for a new Ursack  :

Hey folks, let's keep this apolitical as possible. Feels like we're toeing the line.

Re: What impact will NPS firings have?

I wonder if there’s scope for volunteer trial maintenance, TP distribution, etc? Drumming up/organizing volunteers and supplies is one issue. But supposing, say, a volunteer trail crew got themselves to ISRO, would anything stop them from clearing deadfall?

There have been volunteer trail crew ...

Re: Best Freeze-Dried Meals

I started de-hydrating some of my own freezer bag meals. Things that have worked great include spaghetti, chili mac, and hash, as well as apples and strawberries. Also use de-hydrated ground turkey in "backpackers thanksgiving" (instant potatoes, stove top stuffing, cranberries, french onions ...

Re: "Old Reliable"

re Food storage... Last year a couple a couple of young wolves decided that food from humans was easier than hunting, humans aren't that scary, and proceeded to raid campsites, dumpsters in R.H., dragged off packs, etc. It seemed to be limited to 2 wolves. By the end of summer the NPS had food ...

Re: 2025 New Gear

(4) Really like my Tarptent, the Saddle model, a 2 person version of the Notch. Unfortunately they only made it for a short time, but it's lighter than all their current 2 person, nylon, double-wall options (mid-30 oz as I recall). I once asked Henry (owner of Tarptent) why he didn't keep in their ...

Re: Ranger snacks?

Didn't even have snacks last year. Bring your own snacks and drinks (they do have water). There was only 1 ranger doing everything (orientation, registration, questions, etc.) and no other NPS employees in the passenger areas of the boat.

Re: Food safety

Apparently the problem last year was limited to 2 young wolves (yearlings) on the NE end of the island. The hope was (and is) that they will de-acclimate to us humans over the winter and will have learned to fend for themselves. That may be wishful thinking--but don't know of any good precedent to ...
