TR: June 11-19, 2013 [RH to Windigo and McCargoe to RH]
Hi all, Been a while since I've been active on the Forums. I got back June 19th from an awesome 8 days on the Island. This trip was an experiment. Ever since I first went backpacking at age 14 (44 years ago  ) it has been the same routine - fill up the pack with as much stuff as you can and d...

Isle Royale Photography Workshop
Hi all, There are only 5 people signed up for the Isle Royale Photography Workshop for this year, so it's in danger of not being held (6 person minimum, 12 person maximum). It's taught by Bob Guiliani, former Isle Royale Natural History Association President as well as professional photographer and ...

Re: West Side Itinerary suggestions?
I know the Voyageur drops off at sites, but I believe the Ranger does as well? Nope, the Ranger just goes to Rock Harbor. Actually you can get dropped at Mott Island, which can be convenient if you are paddling to Chippewa Harbor or Moskey and don't want to paddle all the way from Rock Harbor. Just...

Re: Water
Hello, Newbie headed to the island this weekend. We are just trying to wrap up our last minute needs. I've purchased the Isle Royale map, but was disappointed that it didn't specify where water can be found. We are bringing a pump-style water purifier (with tablets as a back up). We are used to hik...

Re: Portaging regulations into inland lakes?
Keweenaw, as I read it, what you quoted applies BEFORE bringing your canoe or kayak to the island. And then wiping down between Superior and the inland lakes. But it's not as clear as it could be. Anyways, I'd bring some rags and ziplocs by my reading. I really don't think they want you to bring bl...

Re: Are fires still permitted??
Are fires still permitted in fire pits only? Hoping there's no ban with the lack of rain we've received this summer.. We've had pretty regular rains up here all summer and I have heard of no bans. The Greenstone paper lists the campgrounds where fires are permitted. Some have fire rings, some have ...

Re: Looking for itinerary suggestions.
Lane Cove is the "wildest" and most remote hike-in campground on the East side of the Island. The trail is not at all technical. Rock Harbor to the threemile junction along the Tobin Harbor trail is a walk in the woods - nice surface and is right on Tobin Harbor. If you want to save weight...

Re: Portaging regulations into inland lakes?
Hello paddlers! I have a question that I'm hoping you can help me with. My buddies and I leave this Friday for a paddling trip thru the southern lakes, and we will be portaging from Chippewa to Lake Whittlesey. In the past I thought the requlations on travelling from Lake Superior to an inland la...

Re: Bushwacking Question
It certainly would be an adventure. Keep in mind that much off trail terrain on ISRO is difficult to very difficult due to some or all of the following: marsh, rock walls, beaver dams, unmarked mine shafts, and streams/creeks. Sufficient drinking water may also be an issue (when you are away from i...

Re: Hook regulations Isle Royale and DNR issues.
I just spoke to the East District Ranger who was familiar with the encounter. He claims that it was amicable but that the paddlers involved did not know the regs and had come out of the backcountry having fished with barbed hooks and stated that they were going to fish Lake Superior, although they d...

Re: Hook regulations Isle Royale and DNR issues.
Barbless treble hooks are acceptable. For your informaiton, only the lure on your line needs to be barbless. You can pinch down the barbs on your lures as needed. I myself have started to cut one or two hooks off my trebles to facilitate the quick release of Northerns. Don't forget the jaw spreader...

Re: Hook regulations Isle Royale and DNR issues.
Hello, I'm going to the island this week and a couple of the groups from my old scout troop that I'm going with said they had some issues with a Park Ranger named Seth. I'm just looking to see if anyone who has been to the island recently knows what the regulations are on hooks on lures. From what ...

Re: Cheap motels in Houghton?
Lots of snowmobilers around right now, so "quieter" might not be the case.LeftOvers wrote:Any feedback on the Super 8 a few blocks east of IR HQ? Looks like it could be a little quieter than many others which hug the main roads. I'm going in two weeks for one night (March, 2012).
Thanks.

Re: Today's Lesson: You can't ignore a NPS fine.
A couple of years ago a couple of inebriated MTU students decided, the night before graduation, to steal a life ring from the Ranger. They were caught, spent the night in jail, and were extremely lucky that the FBI office in Marquette decided not to press federal charges.
