Nope. I've had the potatoes be a little too chewy, but never an inedible one. If it is really cold out the water could cool off before the dinner completely rehydrates, so wrapping in a sweatshirt might help.

Re: DEET and your sleeping bag
The other solution is to put the DEET on a bug jacket which you don't wear in the sleeping bag. The other other solution is don't use DEET. If blackflies are bad I use a headnet and lightweight long sleeve shirt. Mosquitoes respond pretty well to non-DEET "natural" repellents. Mostly, tho...

Re: Cheap motels in Houghton?
Hi Eric,
Yep, there are no places to eat near there. You would have to drive back to Hancock/Houghton or up to Calumet. I would bring some breakfast items to eat in the room to save a trip.
Let me know if you need other info!

Re: New Park Regulations for Food Storage
The regulation (from pg 12) states: "... In the backcountry, all food, garbage, and scented items shall be sealed so as to prevent smells." That's apparently as far as it goes for the time being. I take it to mean "bring Ziplocks"! The whole place should be treated as, "in ...

It works against blackflies as well, although I find it needs to be reapplied often.DonNewcomb wrote:My understanding is that DEET only repels (confuses actually) mosquitoes. It does nothing about flies, gnats, etc.

Re: Fire rings and fire wood.
As always, thanks for the feedback. We're planning to be fully reliant on backpack stoves, but it might be nice to include a foilpack fish dinner or share a small social campfire sometime during our 6 day visit. Or will the bugs suck the enjoyment out of an evening campfire anyway? Mosquitoes are v...

Re: Fire rings and fire wood.
Hi Eddy, Get a copy of the Greenstone (the Park newspaper) - it has the campgrounds listed and shows which have individual and which have group rings. The individual ones are generally the "grill on a post" type. There is no stash of wood - the Park suggests gathering from a wide area away...

Re: Critque/Suggestions of our itinerary
Sounds like a good trip! It's good you have an extra day built in as Siskiwit is a very big lake and a howling wind from the SW through N to NE could strand you at Malone 'til it dies down. From Wood Lake to Chippewa campground should be OK except in the highest of winds. Make sure the little one ha...

Re: Seek feedback re P/P options south from McCargoe Cove.
Hi Eddy, Well, it looks like you're already finding out that your trip is too short! That's the nature of Isle Royale - always more to see and do. First up, algae blooms are rare, not likely, and this summer is starting out significantly cooler than last. To reiterate what Midwest Ed said - the Voya...

Re: Rock Harbor to Cemetery Island
That's around 8-9 miles one way. In a kayak it would take me maybe 2 hours one way on a calm day. Canoe - more depending on the canoe and whether I have a paddling partner. Wind/waves - more, maybe much more. Headwind picks up en route - even more. Wind picks up too much - stranded (make sure you ch...

Hi John,
Can you give a synopsis of the article? The NYT wants me to create an account in order to read it.

Hey Ingo, Maybe I DID get the last one: From http://www.nps.gov/archive/isro/nr_profile_internal/nr_pages/fish%20list.htm Lake Desor whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis dustini A variant of Coregonus clupeaformis is known only from Lake Desor on Isle Royale. Re: Inland Fishing
I thought I had a copy of "Fishes of Isle Royale" but I can't find it. $3.95 from irkpa.org, although I think it may be quite old now.
I know Lake Desor has whitefish, because I caught one there about 35 years ago. Supposedly the Lake Desor Whitefish is/was a separate subspecies.

I agree with John. As an added bonus, you can go greenstoning in Moskey Basin (although according to Park Service regulations you cannot keep any to take home).
