Re: Autumn Satellite Imagery
one of caltopo's base layers is a weekly high resolution satellite image. I've used the feature obsessively to try to gauge snow cover on routes I wanted to hike. It didn't occur to me that leaves would show up too! The most recent image of IR was occluded by cloud cover. This one, from a week ago, ...

Eastern Sierra October dayhiikes
Since things seem slow now that the Park has closed for the season-- Due to a profound oddity in our terms of employment, Mr t and I are allowed to do our jobs remotely this year. We are set up in a cabin in a redwood grove in a community called "Skylonda," which (as its name suggests) may...

Re: TR: 8/8/19 - 8/16/19 Dad and daughter kayak trip
I love seeing father-daughter teams in the wilderness. I don't think I'd be doing this if my own dad hadn't shared his love of the outdoors when I was too little to appreciate that, technically, I wasn't cut out to be a mountain man.

Un-unsuccess! What a great trip and report! (Also: trail wine and communication with the outside world weeks into a wilderness trip?? ---I'd say Tim was amply rewarded for sharing his shelter.)

Re: Itinerary Review
Thanks for reporting back! I'm with your wife on the question of which parts of backpacking are the hardest. Some trips I have a morning mantra as I squirm back in to my sodden walking clothes: "Wool insulates even when wet. Wool insulates even when wet...."

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor Itinerary
A fantastic trip indeed! It makes me wonder just how many moose see US as we mosey through the woods. Thanks for reporting back.

Re: TR: 8/23 – 8/31 2019 [RH-3M-DF-MB-LR-MB-DF-3M-RH] First Timer
Fabricating trip reports is a nice idea, but I have no imagination. Also, I'm thinking of devoting my off-season energies to a startup cottage business: ultralight prosthetic body parts for the poor souls (who are probably the majority of the human race) whose bodies don't conform to the assumptions...

fantastic, fantastic report! Thanks!
Upon first setting foot on the island, I entered a chronic state of planning my next trip.

Hooray, Midwest Ed! You must have better small motor control than I do. I can never seem to enter things into cells in Excel spreadsheets either . . . .

Re: Windigo to Greenstone Ridge
And while you're waiting for paper maps, if you're patient and/or into this kind of fiddling, the free mapping gadget CalTopo has a "terrain statistics" (under Measure in the toolbar above the main map) fearure that will return an altitude profile of any route you trace. Route tracing is t...

Re: Late June Conditions
(Supposing the sun is out) you should be prepared for many, many hours of daylight in late june---it gets light well before 6 and stays that way until well after 10. So bring something (ideally not a DEET-soaked buff) that serves as a sleeping mask!

Re: TR- 8/9-17, 2019 by kayak Tobin and Rock Harbor
Thanks goodness for packrafters! I'm sorry about the knee but glad that it didn't keep you from having an outstanding trip. Can you tell us more about this collapsible kayak of yours? (When I was a kid, my father's standing joke reply to questions about what he wanted for Xmas/bday/father's day was:...
