Re: Did the Search Function change or am I missing something
The best way to search is not to use the search capability of the Isle Royal Forums. Use the Google advanced search feature instead. Works for me. Type this example into the Google command line or use the advanced search command to search within a site or domain. copper mine site:http://www.isleroya...

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
In early September 2010 there were many blowdowns on the western end of the island. Met one of the park workers at Lake Desor South and he said they typically use chainsaws, and try to limit their work to May, before there are too many people. They are concerned about the noise impacting the wildern...

Re: What sort of fishing rod would you recommend?
There is a good deal of info in threads already posted here in the "Canoeing, Kayaking, and Fishing" forum. Review all the posts from April 2011 and May 2011.
I just picked up a St. Croix Triumph 6'6" medium action four piece travel rod (TRS66MF4, $99).

Re: How do you include fresh fish in your menu plan?
I'm planning on cooking mine as a Thai-Style fish soup. I'll bring along some shallots, garlic, jalapeno, 1T oil, cilantro, chicken bouillon, lime juice, and fish sauce. If I don't catch fish I can use the ingredients in other meals. I take ample food to cover all my meals. If I catch/cook fish, I w...

Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
Excerpt from the Isle Royale NPS FAQ: Are there storage lockers on the Island? No, there are no storage lockers on the Island. The concession operation at Rock Harbor and Windigo do offer a service to store gear for a fee. The box of gear cannot contain stove fuel or food. Contact the Rock Harbor Lo...

Re: Basic Fishing Supplies
John, During my research for fishing tips on Isle Royale, I stumbled across your recommendations (circa 2007) on the backpacker.com forums stating that you use Rapala's in size 9 and 11. Now you are recommending size 13. Have you found that the larger size lures work better for you? Do you still rec...

Re: Water filter recommendation?
I too started with a First Need on Isle Royale but the residual glacial silt in Lake Superior clogged it quickly. I now use the MSR Miniworks EX. Biggest reason is that it is field maintainable. When it starts to clog, open it up and clean the filter element with the scrubbing pad.

Re: Hook restrictions on a fishing lure?
Do you bring side cutters with you in addition to pliers/hemostats?
Rapala makes a mini side cutter that is smaller and lighter in weight. I wonder if it would be sufficient to cut hooks?
