Re: Wendigo to North Lake Desor.....advice wanted!
One important thing to keep in mind is that the stretch of trail from Windigo to North Lake Desor is all up hill (except for the stretch from the junction to the North Lake Desor camp ground which is all down hill). You will be crossing 2 beaver dams (if you cross 3 beaver dams you are not on the tr...

Re: Where to start my trip
Flying in to Windigo and taking the Minong Ridge trail to Rock Harbor will have you either on inland lake campgrounds or on Lake Superior shore campgrounds the entire way. The one caveat is that the first day from Windigo to North Lake Desor or Little Todd (depending on how much self abuse you enjoy...

Re: West or East? Which side do you like more? Why?
What about North -- Minong Trail campsites -- and South -- Greenstone Ridge Trail and south campsites? Canoe/ boat only campsites? As has been stated before, the timing of being at a campsite is second only to the location of the campsite. Little Todd, because of its remoteness and its scenery, is m...

Re: HELP! Upcoming Trip
The Queen will get you into Rock Harbor earlier in the day. Daisy Farm is 7 miles from Rock Harbor and could be a good Day 1 objective; Moskey Basin is 10 miles or so from RH and could be an alternate objective if you are feeling really good. McCargoe Cove or Todd Harbor could be Day 2 objectives. D...

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor
I agree on W. Chickenbone over E. Chickenbone. You could hike from Windigo to S. Lake Desor on your first day (once you are at the trail intersection that goes to Island Mine, the Greenstone is "fairly" level (for ISRO) to the intersection leading to SLD. You would then have a lighter 2d d...

Re: Minong ridge tentative itinerary (input wanted)
The plan is doable. Day 3 will be a major hike -- the trail between LDN and the Windigo/Huginnin Cove trail intersection is the most difficult section of trail on ISRO and you are looking at a full days hike. I fully agree with the other comments about Little Todd. It is a very intimate campground a...

Re: Fishing Update........
Washington Creek, say between the campground and the bridge, is fly fishable -- roll casting and drop casting. While I have not tried it, I would imagine that the Big Siskiwit is also fly fishable. Keep in mind that brook trout are heavily regulated on ISRO but there could be a steelhead run... You ...

Re: Chippewa Harbor via Lake Superior by canoe
Last year I was at Chippewa Harbor when 3 canoes which had been paddled from Rock Harbor came in. Shortly afterwards the law enforcement ranger came in as well to do a safety check on the canoers (and to issue warnings to them for improper safety gear, trash, and other violations). The canoers said ...

Re: Thoughts on a Labor Day-ish Trip?
The long Labor day weekend will mean that campsites in the RH area (RH, TM, DF, MB) will be full or nearly so and the noise level will be higher. If you can get to some of the interior campgrounds you should be OK. There also will be more boating activity so CI and TI may also be full. Water -- agre...

Re: MSR stoves
I have a Dragonfly and a 32oz fuel bottle. I don't know about head to head fuel consumption between a Whisperlite and a Dragonfly, but the range of 180-240 minutes of burn time seems consistent with my experience. Suffice it to say that I still had more than a third of the fuel bottle full after a 2...

Re: Southwest MI back country camping
You could try the Allegan State Game area near Allegan, MI -- there is camping there and you might be able to get a permit for dispersed camping. The phone number is 269-673-2430. Stealth camping might be an option... The North Country Trail goes through west Michigan. However, until you get north o...

I seem to recall that at the Wolf Study hq near the Edson Fishery that there is a mass grave (the result of a drunken riot between two mining camps -- many fatalities).

Re: Trip plan for Minong trail
Camp fox situation on the Minong: I never had an issue with foxes in camp, but they were present and visible on the trail. Moose: there is a camp moose in the Washington Creek campground. You will also see plenty of moose sign along the Minong and possibly a moose or 2. Be VERY careful if you do com...

Re: VII to delay start of season
Looks like Rock Harbor and Washington Harbor both have ice cover according to the MODIS satellite imagery on May 5: http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/webdata/cwops/html/modis/modis.php?region=s&page=1&template=sub&image=a1.14125.1811.LakeSuperior.143.250m.jpg I believe that historically (...

The ice cover on Lake Superior could lead to a cooler summer
It may be cooler and wetter than normal on ISRO this summer: http://www.freep.com/article/20140501/N ... -ice-cover
