Re: Best stove for new backpacker

Any of the small canister stoves would be a good choice. Look into SnowPeak Gigapower stove and MSR Pocket Rocket. Primus Trail Stove is less expensive and less to fold up, but marginally bulkier to carry. Any of these three and similar models from other brands would be good beginner stoves, using t...

Re: house boats

Ranger will transport boats up to 20 ft long. I didn’t see any guidance about width or height or weight restriction. I have seen sailboats and motorboats transported, but never what I would consider a houseboat or pontoon boat. Does not mean it can’t t be done, but you should get in touch with the H...

A quick trip! Did it whet your appetite for another trip to Isle Royale? And I am also interested in your impressions of Voyageurs NP.

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor Itinerary

Hatchet Lake to Chickenbone Junction just above WCB campsite is one of my favorite stretches of trail because of the views. But you seem to have hit a moose jackpot on that stretch too! Sounds like you had a great trip, thanks for the report.

Re: Dad and daughter kayak trip 8/8/19 - 8/16/19

Nice report! Thanks for sharing.

The week was pretty windy, you were one of at least three kayak groups dodging around in Rock Harbor with revised plans because of the wind! I’m glad we got to meet briefly.

Re: Places to get equipment?

If you know what to look for and how to tell the difference between lightly used and worn out, garage sales can be a great source of bargain-priced gear. There is also a lot of junk sold too, so be sure you know what to look for or take a friend who know.

Re: Looking for advice

So Booyah and daughter, have you done a trip report? I heard just a little about your adventure when you were helping me haul my kayak to my campsite to dismantle and pack it. So tell us about your trip!

Re: Voyageurs

Minnesota sources are reporting the death by bear mauling, on Red Pine Island in Ontario waters, north of Voyageurs NP. I wonder what happened? Says she went out to check on her dogs.

Those crow-size red-headed woodpeckers are the Pileated (pill'-ee-ate-ed) Woodpecker. generally uncommon, but if you hear one drumming on a dead tree you will recognize the sound! They may be common on IsRo, I am not sure. They are on the "Birds of the Great Lakes" ID card I took with me o...

In defense of the Nikon Coolpix. When my beloved Canon Sureshot finally developed some bad pixels or whatever they are called, I tried to buy a new pocket point-and-shoot camera. But there are few options for me as I insist on AA batteries, not rechargeable. I ended up buying a used Nikon Coolpix at...

Re: TR- 8/9-17, 2019 by kayak Tobin and Rock Harbor

Hey you're welcome! I hope you and your daughter and your kayaks had a safe trip home. Hopefully the yoke will be of more use to you than it was to me. The other yoke works much better with my folding kayak, and I hate wasting space to store something that is of value to someone else but not to me.

Re: Success fishing?

Lake Ritchie is on a southern route from West Chickenbone to Daisy Farm. You would get off the Greenstone Ridge Trail and come into DF via Lake Ritchie and Moskey Basin. I like this route and I don’t even fish...... when you get your maps, you can check it out. Also, the Greenstone Ridge Trail cross...
