"The bow wave of grasshoppers we stirred up as we walked clicked and popped as if electrically charged."

That's some nice writing.

They were in the water, near the shore, standing in some reeds.

Re: PLB vs. satellite communicator

Please report back on your impressions during setup and first usage. The InReach Mini worked great on its first trip. We opted against using the tracking feature, in order to preserve battery power during the 7 days we were out. There was no trouble linking to the satellite, though it did take a so...

TR: 7-21 to 7-28-21 [CANOE]: MC-WCL-IL-WL-MB: More or less

Coming from Grand Portage, in order to avoid the crowd at Rock Harbor, this year we opted to get dropped at McCargoe, then make our way to Lake Richie, Intermediate Lake and Wood Lake, exiting at Malone. Unfortunately, this didn't help us get to a secluded spot more quickly. Briefly, there were... M...

I concur - we saw no evidence of an algae bloom on Lake Richie when we paddled through on July 22.

Sandhill cranes

I was surprised to see a pair of sandhill cranes at Wood Lake a few days ago. Sorry - no photos.

Re: PLB vs. satellite communicator

Please report back on your impressions during setup and first usage. I just set-up the Garmin InReach MINI. The billing portion of Garmin's website wasn't working correctly last weekend, but they had the glitch fixed by Monday. The set-up required going to a couple of websites, reading instructions...

Re: Duluth to Grand Portage

Other advantages to renting a car in Duluth and driving to Grand Portage: 1. You can easily buy fuel, lighters and any last minute food items in Duluth. 2. You can stop off at leisure at sites along the way (Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls). 3. You can poke around Grand Marais and get a dece...

Re: Duluth to Grand Portage

Though obviously an additional expense, the rental car sitting at the Grand Portage is also a nice place to store whatever clothes, etc that you'd rather not take out to the island. In a normal year, you can get a mid-size rental car in Duluth for $260 a week.

Re: Duluth to Grand Portage

When we fly in from Texas, we rent a car and let it sit for a week.
