Re: I need general advice on trails, weather, etc.
Rock Harbor - Moskey - McCargoe - 3M - RH+Scoville (with a rest day) (38.2 miles) is a good trip for me. I will usually go back to Moskey instead of 3M, just me. I like Moskey. It is a long hike, but I don't mind it. It is as Midwest Ed said, up 10 down 3 etc. most of the way, but I find it worth th...

Re: Tent for 3, or individual?
I have been to the island with friends, couples and small groups. I personally like my own 2 person tent. I have a 3 person that I lend out that gives couples their own tent, but still has enough room for cards because none of my gear is in the tent. I made a big poncho out of parachute material (wa...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition
I just got a tent with my excess dividend from last year. I don't spend mine straight away, the best sales are at season change so I go a 3 season ultralight tent in December for free. ( I can call it free because I don't interest). P.S. The life time satisfaction guarantee has changed a bit. You no...

Re: Has anyone ever got a kayak or canoe into Sargent Lake?
I ran into a guy about 10 years ago when I was staying at McCargoe who had been fishing at Sargent. He said there was a fairly well traveled trail which very much paralleled the stream feeding into McCargoe cove. The trail was bushwhacked by a fishing guide who took people back there. I wasn't fishi...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations
I haven't seen it noted anywhere on this thread so: I have taken IR seaplanes 3 or 4 times and I love them; I will be traveling with them this year at least once, but... keep in mind that you might not get there at the time you expect and might even be a day late. On the return trip you might have a...

Re: June 16th-23rd hike trip route planning
Two years ago I did a trip with a couple that closely resembles Ingo's trip suggestion. We were up earlyish from Island mine and we got to Hatchet for lunch where there were some loud fisherman so we decided to keep going. Hatchet to Todd is a fairly easy trip with some nice views. I caught a really...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations
I like Ingo's plan, I might do that myself this year. If you are flying, don't waste the opportunity for an end to end. Do a Rock to Windigo. I don't think you can go wrong with any route, but Chippewa, Malone and Siskiwit are harder to plan into loops for a boat trip, in my opinion. Now my two cent...

Re: Planning my second trip, first was about 9 years ago...
I have been a few times very early in the season, never on the first boat. Like torpified stated, the island wakes up slowly over the first few weeks. The west end is even a slower start. In the first few months, plan for snow ice and sleet, I didn't my first trip in late May and it took it's toll. ...

Re: Asking for plan “B” advice
Plan C: remember you can change your plans. I have always wanted to your plan A( I just haven't got around to it), but have never been disappointed with any campgrounds or routes. I plan my plan C by getting back to the dock for departure.

Re: Are bikes coming to Isle Royale?
Although I have carried my kayak on the worst of the portages, I would still prefer to not have any wheeled devices on portages. Not for the sake of "no wheels anywhere, ever", but a wheeled device on a soft trail makes a channel that the water flows down which can progress to a severe ero...

Re: trail runners?
Trail runners, in my opinion, cause far less disruption to the wildlife than do boy scouts. I have had trail runners pass me so quietly that they startled me from behind. I have have only once seen a boy scout troop before I have seen them. Let us not forget the ranger stationed at Amygdaloid a few ...

Re: TR 8/4-8/9 2017 [Backpacking] [Video log of RH, 3M, MB, MCC, DF, RH]
Great videos!! Many other people ask questions about this route. Your video will make an awesome informational video for people headed to the Island for the first time. You have just enough video of the sites and the routes without being long winded. I plan to funnel man of the questions that come u...
