Re: What to buy with windfall at REI?
BA Copper Spur 2 tent should just about do it. Whisperlite Universal stove if there's money left over.

Re: Greenstone Vs Minong
The Minong is NOT a shoreline trail. It follows an inland ridge on the north side of the island. Three overnight campgrounds, two of them are on the Lake Superior shoreline on side trails off the ridge.

Re: late July canoe trip: packs, sleeping bag
Where are you getting the canoe from? I ask, because there are some caveats about renting on the island. If you’re bringing your own, great. If it was me, I would try to go as light in gear as you would when backpacking, but then pack into one large and one moderate canoe pack. This way, one person ...

Re: Tents in Shelters
I have put my tent up in a shelter once, when a very cold wind was blowing directly into the shelter and my tarp wasn't big enough to work. It had the additional advantage of allowing me to pack up the tent clean and dry the next morning to go home, but the main reason was for warmth. It did make a ...

Re: Planning first trip to IR
One factor that noone has mentioned yet, is that if you end at Malone Bay campground (By Siksiwit Lake), to get picked up by a ferry there and returned to Rock Harbor would take you three days - first day picked up and taken to Windigo, second day waiting at Windigo, third day picked up at Windigo a...

Re: Campground question
I think a number of people started “let’s visit all the national parks” during shutdown, and are getting around to IsRo. Typically not backpackers, but a couple days of camping is possible at Windigo/Washington Creek. That’s what I would do under the circumstances. RH is much more expensive and diff...

Re: password woes
Yeah, I had to get admin help when I changed jobs, losing access to my email of record to reset a long-forgotten password. I ended up with a whole new persona! Glad that particular learning experience was learned via a hobby, without locking up, say, my bank account or my health insurance!

Re: Itinerary advice
One possible way to try for the most scenery would be to 1. Get up on the Greenstone as soon as possible (RH-3Mile-Mt. Franklin-Chickenbone Lake-Hatchet Lake), then 2. cross over to the Minong and do the western end of the Minong. Select your campsites along the route based on your personal mileage ...

If you have a boat, Merritt Lane is good. But it’s water-only access.

Re: TR (5/31-6/7, 2021): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting
I hiked that 5-mile stretch in August a few years ago and the underbrush was 5’ high in spots and the only way to stay precisely on the trail was to feel the groove with your feet.

Re: Very young children
There are several places in the region where you can have a north woods experience, and not be quite so isolated and inflexible as a trip to Isle Royale. Superior Hiking Trail, Superior National Forest including the Boundary Waters Wilderness, Pictured Rocks And/or Apostle Islands, any of these coul...

Re: Bathing
Covering up is the norm on Isle Royale. I wash up wearing shorts and a tank top, then take a wet rag into my tent or shelter to wash more privately. There will be many other people around at campsites. On the other hand, in the Boundary Waters wilderness in Minnesota, it’s more a “we’re all adults” ...

That is a treasure trove! If I have a couple of the brochures that are "cover only" over the years, would it be useful to send them to someone for inclusion in this archive?

I found it amusing that it cost men $2.00 for a fishing license, wives included was $.50 extra.

Re: where is Picket Bay?
Pickett Bay is inside Todd Harbor. It's the inner-most bay inside the much larger Todd Harbor, on the southwestern end. The present-day Todd Harbor campground is in Pickett Bay. Found it on the USGS quad map. Yes, please post the link! Then maybe I can get the moderators to move this thread into the...
