Re: Horne Fire

In case people haven't seen this pic. To me, not as bad as all the smoke suggested.

Re: Horne Fire

I cannot help thinking ahead to the views this will open up from the eastern end of the Greenstone! And I would volunteer for trail work crew to clean up the affected trails next spring. Hoping for safety of the fire crews keeping tabs on this. I had the same thought. Should be some fine views look...

I found it by entering "Horne Fire" in the search section on the Isle Royale website. The map came up, as well as other pertinent information.

Re: Horne Fire

200+acres is a respectable fire. The wind direction seems to have changed. Yesterday it was blowing south. Today, it's blowing north. Which means some of the flames will be blowing back onto already burned land. Already making plans to visit the island next summer. I have to walk through this burned...

Re: Fire ban

This year's a perfect storm for forest fires in the boreal forest. Way below average rainfall combined with a spruce budworm outbreak (which hits balsam fir harder than spruce) make for ideal conditions for stand-replacement fires. But fire is a natural part of the boreal forest ecosystem and should...

Re: Horne Fire

Looks like the Horne Fire has taken off. A screenshot from the Mott Island cam at about 11:00 PM Saturday. Flames and smoke are obvious.

Re: Sandhill cranes

I remember hearing Sandhills back in the 90's, someplace on IR. They do hang out in old beaver floodings. According to the Park Service, they do breed on the Island.

Re: June 2021 weather & bugs

Bugs usually aren't the issue in mid-August than they are in June. Most of my trips to the Island have been in the last two weeks of August. Kayak camping, so our camp sites are on water. I take along bug dope, but use it sparingly, mainly in the evening. Not sure what to expect for campsites away f...

Surprised they had a report this year, considering there was no winter survey. No matter, I look forward to reading it.
