Re: Trip plans: Windigo, N Desor, Hatchet, Malone Bay
It was a magical little place, made even better because it was unexpected. I definitely recommend checking it out. Here's a photo with my wife and hiking partner for scale. The stream continues through the large boulders at the bottom and drains into a lowland area. The coordinates on the photo are ...

Re: Trip plans: Windigo, N Desor, Hatchet, Malone Bay
One quick note about the Feldtmann loop that is often not mentioned: there is no water to be found between Siskiwit Bay and Feldtmann Lake. In a good year, if you know where to look, there is a crevice near the fire lookout that a little water seeps out of, but it is minimal and cannot be counted o...

Re: Am I Crazy? Swim across Tobin Harbor as short cut?
Yes, you are crazy. Ok, enough silliness. This is a bad plan. Do you have open water swimming experience? At that distance? This is a recipe for drowning even in decent weather. It is much crazier than diving in one place, it's crossing a significant amount of open water. Aside from experience, the ...

Re: Smoke from Canada's forest fires
Unfortunately the National Weather Service has an air quality alert for today, July 15. It covers the island (and most surrounding mainland) due to Canadian forest fire smoke:

Re: Screenshots of old maps
Those are a lot of fun! Quite a lot that's been added since that first map: - No Minong, of course. - West half of the Feldtmann Loop didn't exist. - West half of Huginnin didn't exist either. - No Indian Portage Trail, so no land route out of Chippewa Harbor - In general, the McCargoe/Chickenbone a...

Re: Crazy Idea to Circumnavigate the Island?
We ended up leaving an 8 oz can used for just 2 boils on that crate (after fully using one other 8 oz can). We needed it -- I'm glad we had it -- but I sure wish they'd had 4oz cans.

Re: Random thoughts and questions
IncaRoads, that's a very good solution - it would match the Copper Harbor Conglomerate well.

Re: Random thoughts and questions
I believe your answer to #2 is that it's an old logging road that supported logging around the Big Siskiwit River described in this link. https://iri.forest.mtu.edu/Historic_Logging.htm That is definitely possible, and I'm definitely leaning towards some kind of logging-related item. The surroundin...

Re: Random thoughts and questions
RE: the waterfall, is this between Feldtmann Lake and Windigo? Or in one of the ridge drop-offs between Feldtmann Lake and Siskiwit Bay? I recall a beautiful shady spot and a creek with a waterfall, in a ravine along the trail to Siskiwit Bay that noone seems to ever mention as a reliable water sou...

Re: Random thoughts and questions
I'd thought about a shoreline option -- maybe even an ancient shoreline of Feldtmann lake itself. But I'm pretty sure that's not what this is. First, I'm pretty sure the ancient shoreline is what you follow as you head north out of Feldtmann campground -- it's a sort of minor ledge that the trail fo...

Re: Random thoughts and questions
In regard to question #2... my buddies and I both wondered the same thing. After several minutes of discussion and brainstorming, we came up with the idea that maybe it was built so railway tracks could be laid on top during the copper mining days. That would provide a stable and elevated route for...

Re: Random thoughts and questions
Hello again, dcclark! In regard to question #1 and the triangular notches... I wondered the same thing, but I think I figured out the answer. The triangular notches provide a flat surface through which to drive spikes into the logs below it. A rounded surface (without the notch) may make it more di...

Random thoughts and questions
During my recent trip to the island, the long miles and cold nights caused my brain to wander. Here are some questions that I came up with, some serious and some not so much. I'm sure you all can collectively answer them! 1. Why do some boardwalk supports have triangular notches in them? Some boardw...

Board attachment quota has been reached
I recently tried to attach a photo to a post, and got the error that the "board attachment quota has been reached". I'm pretty sure this is a setting that an admin could change if there's space!

Re: Altra Lone Peak Trail Runners
I did the same (brought red Line Peak 6s -- the red makes then go faster :P ). I agree on all counts. They work very well even in deep mud -- I've used them that way in the Porcupine Mountains in May. Because they dry so fast, I'm more willing to just trudge through the middle. It takes a real chang...
