Re: Late June 2023 Minong Itinerary

I think it is all doable. I suspect you will get into N Desor a little earlier than you predict. Parts of the Minong, including those for which you foresee no issues, are treacherous if wet. I fell three times on the exposed ridge in one day. Just a warning and no reason to change your plans. One su...

Re: What are you spending your 2023 REI dividend on?

I have a Garmin for exactly these reasons and the preset messages are great. One thing i warn my wife or any other recipient of the messages about is the “911” message. I warn them that it is more likely that I will need to press the emergency button because i came upon an injured hiker than it bein...

Re: Have u ever met nicer folks, then at ISRO?

I agree with (the other) Jerry. I have never met a hiker who was not pleasant. I have met many boaters who were great, but several who were horrible and thought that the rules we all follow did not apply to them. Still the good far outnumbered the bad among boaters.

Re: 5 Day Menu

I am very jealous. For the last few years I have been unable to eat almost anything on backpacking trips. Not just loss of appetite but gagging. This May, I try again. More focus on electrolite replacement (although i have no idea if that is a cause of this). Someone suggested fritos and peanut butt...

Re: Bug net?

Funny, I always bring a headnet and have never used it. Makes me feel claustrophobic, I guess. That said, as others have pointed out, the weight and space are negligible so why not?

Re: Itinerary insights..

It can be done, but not without some long days. Your first night would almost have to be at Desor, but when do you arrive on the island? Buy the Nat Geo map to plan your route. I think you will see that the route will be pretty clear. As for RH, do you have a lodge reservation? I heard they have bee...

Hi Jerry. Frozen pizza (late afternoon only), microwave burritos, some cheese, stale bagels and regular snacks.

I am very similar to Torpified, except i experience revulsion at the thought of eating. The moment i hit Windigo, I was fine, even after a quick seven mile hike.

Re: TR: July 2022 [CB-W; Hatchet; S Desor; IM]

just striking a note of solidarity: I am not gifted at Eating While Backpacking either. In fact, I'm epicly bad at it, especially if altitude is involved. So IR isn't the worst case, but it's bad. Over time, I've identified a few things I reliably can get down---principally, ramen, fritos, and shot...

TR: July 2022 [CB-W; Hatchet; S Desor; IM]

Just off the island after five days at the end of July. Rather than a formal trip report, i am offering some random thoughts. If anyone has questions about specific trail segments or sites, just ask. Bugs were not bad at all. Of course, they were around but they were manageable. I did treat my cloth...

Re: Is new store in Windigo open yet?

I was on the island last week and was told zero work has been done on the new building since last year. Equipment will be in soon to dig a trench around it to fix leaking into the lower level.

Re: Post your 2022 bug reports here!

Last week of July: Occasional mosquitos but nothing too bad. I did treat my clothes with Permetherin before the trip and that worked great.
