Re: Hot Fishing for Salmon Moskey Basin
I was using some green braided line, the line sucked, broke off several lures using it. I'm going back to 17 pound test Trilene. Unless the line was worn out, nicked from dragging across rocks, etc. the most likely cause of several lost lures is poor knots. I'm no knot expert but I've always liked ...

Re: First time IR canoe trip questions... help a n00b out!!
I agree the Moskey/Ritchie portage trail is not difficult, just long. We normally only made one trip on portages but here we stopped halfway and made a second trip from the half way point. You might consider making a 2 to 3 day, one way trip ending at Malone Bay, then take the Voyager II to Windigo....

Re: First time IR canoe trip questions... help a n00b out!!
Welcome luci, You won’t be able to take it “all in” in just 5 days but you can get a very nice sampling. Are you traveling alone? You didn’t make any reference to your desire for or against portaging. Are you coming in from Michigan or Minnesota? The answers to these questions can affect your choice...

Re: Hancock, MI 3rd snowiest in the US
Living in Houghton during the 1970’s caused me to fall in love with winter and the snow. It’s why I discovered Isle Royale. Try to describe just 20 feet of snow to someone. All they do is stare at you with a funny look on their face. Now I hate shoveling snow; even the few times a year here in North...

Are these feedback sessions to be used as a review of the most recent evictions or are they a "done deal?" Or is this feedback to be used only in "moving forward?" It's clear the requested feedback is meant to cover more than just the one issue but I was interested in the time li...

Re: 2nd trip of year to ISRO NP
Wonderful trip Jerry. There are so so many places worse than IR where a person can get stuck for a day or two. My most memorable trip was the one I did by canoe. It was more focused on inland lakes though. But I certainly enjoyed the "mileage" you guys got from the Rock Harbor to Moskey Ba...

Re: Isle Royale in the News
Baltimore Sun October 27, 1935: "MAJESTIC Isle Royale in Lake Superior is being made a national park. The plan has been afoot since 1931, but the final touch which made it a reality was the signing of a bill by President Roosevelt, only recently, authorizing the $700,000 purchase of the land s...

Re: Isle Royale in the News
On another note, here is a story about the 1936 fire that consumed 25% of the Island. They talk about 1800 CCC workers building a fire line from Chippewa Harbor to McCargoe Cove in order to protect the east end. It also speaks of saving the Holger Johnson tourist camp at Chippewa Harbor. Could this ...

Re: Isle Royale in the News
. . . the acquisition of the island in 1935. Not to get too political, but it was interesting to read about the consternation caused by the lack of private interest to put forward money after the federal government announced it would not buy the Island from the logging concerns, citing the recent b...

Re: Remember the Fitz
Two more lighthouses for sale, in Manitowoc and Kenosha. In another life I’d love to buy a Great Lakes lighthouse if only I could find one that could be remodeled into something suitable (and allowable) for apartment living. These two seem little small and I fear national historic registry restricti...

Re: Remember the Fitz
I remember that day quite well. Hurricane force winds that lasted for hours. I was living in downtown Houghton, above the bakery on Sheldon. The bakery's main brick chimney was blown over onto the roof of the building. It was a huge chimney with literally tons of bricks filling the 3rd floor apartme...

Re: Kayakers rescued from Superior
The success in their rescue was attributed to their EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). Never leave shore without one. Make sure you have the newest style with a 406 MHz broadcasting GPS. Also, kudos to the U.S and Canada Coast Guard. ~Ed - Semper Paratus http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/c...
