John,
My wife and I will be going again. We're working the P&H and Pyranha kayak booth all 3 days. Stop by and say hi. And check out the new P&H sea kayaks!!

Damon

Re: Duncan Bay
I did in July. Everything was normal there except for the fire on the island just east of the dock. Unless they did something to it after I left?
I agree, that's one of my favorite spots as well. Very peaceful in the evening.

Re: Lake Superior Wrath
I believe the highest recorded, or known have been in the high 20's, and 50 ft waves are possible. Eyewitness accounts the night the Fitz went down said they were 40ft! I spoke to an older lady a few years back in Grand Marais Michigan and picked her brain about that night. She remembered it vividly...

Re: solo kayaking adventure
Many people really enjoy solo trips. I would definitely say go for it. I've paddled the island 3 times and circumnavigated in 2007. In addition to what John stated, a roll is very beneficial, but to make it bombproof, you have to have quite a bit of experience rolling in some rough conditions, becau...

Re: Merritt Lane and Duncan Narrows
Most times I've paddled around Merritt Lane it was full. One time we got there early in the afternoon after heading around Blake and got the shelter. Some other paddlers took the the tent site. A few hours later the weather turned bad and a group of paddlers came around Blake. Waves crashing into/ar...

Re: Handguns in Parks
WOW, I'm surprised everyone's beloved Obama would support such legislation. Funny.
Have to agree though, as a second amendment enthusiast, I'd have to say there is absolutely no reason to bring a pistol or any other firearm to IR.
Regards,
Damon

Re: Campsites and Campfires
Not sure if those fire posts (grills) are what your thinking about in regards to having a camp fire. There aren't any traditional fire pits like you're thinking about, to my knowledge anyway. And IR is very strict regarding the fire policy. I think Duncan Narrows has posts as well. The Belle firepla...

Re: Kayak Pre-planning trip
That plan seems fine, however, despite the warnings of Blake, don't rule it our altogether. It's actually a very beautiful area...the coastline on the northwest side is some great paddling up close to the bluffs. Plus, from Merritt Lane, you can get a good idea of what BP may be doing, and turn back...

Re: Kayak Pre-planning trip
How much experience do you and your paddling partner really have? For two paddlers headed out to the island on their own, I would emphasize that you should have some solid rescue skills between the two of you since you cannot roll. You mentioned renting a VHF? I would go ahead and buy one instead. T...

Re: Guided trip July 20th
Yeah, we were ready to carry what ever they indicated and figure we were just given was $100,000.
Would it have anything to do with the type of commercial business you're conducting on the island?

Re: Guided trip July 20th
Just a note,,, the liability insurance is $100,000, naming the park as an additional insured, not $2 million.

Re: Guided trip July 20th
Yeah, thanks for the input. We are all good. We looked in to it a long time ago and are aware of the permit, plus we're covered with the insurance policy. Believe me, I wouldn't head out with clients on a trip without the necessary paperwork and having done my homework.

Re: Guided trip July 20th
Bob.. Yes, thanks for mentioning, I already checked into it. I'm just seeing what kind of interest we would have with a trip of this design. The group size would be very small, considering, and definitely within the guidelines of group camping for the island. It will also be considerably less expens...

Re: Malone Bay to Rock Harbor 2 Days?
From Malone to Rock Harbor in two days...yes. Definitely doable. With the mileage you've paddled in the past, a 22 mile paddle can be completed very easy in just a day. Of course, conditions on the "Lady" will dictate your paddling days, but pushin off early in the morning, you can get by ...
