Re: 2012 early trip itinerary thoughts?
The Voyageur II does not stop at Moskey, so you can't use it to shuttle from there to Chippewa.

Re: Smokies in March?
Not any help, Jess. Haven't made it there yet, despite the family cabin being only an hr or so away. Hope to get up for at least a day hike this summer.

Re: gear list (for Midwest Ed)
The other thing I need to overcome is that I tend to be a cautious contingency planner. ... I know I need to stop that practice, but I always feel like somehow I may be unprepared! Were you a Boy Scout, too? I'm the same way, but getting better. My first aid bag is probably 1/4 of what it once was,...

Depending on how much it is, a chair and/or pillow. I always carry both, but my old thermarest chair won't work with my new pad. The pillow saves a few oz and is very comfy.

Re: 1st timer
That works, and is a nice little trip! All are great campsites. And good fishing all along the way. The Chippewa Harbor dock is at the campground, so there's no paddling involved the day you get there. The portage into Whittlesey is kinda rocky/rooty, but the one into Wood Lake is easy (as I recall,...

Re: Windigo or Rock Habor
You really can't go wrong either place. The Rock Harbor area has more scenic coastline and ridgeline views. Windigo has the advantage that you can camp there for 3 consecutive nights, and it's less developed and busy. Since you're considering the seaplane, I assume you're thinking of renting a kayak...

Re: Windigo or Rock Habor
If you're set on going from Copper Harbor, then Windigo is not a practical option for a 3-4 night trip. But that's OK. There's plenty around Rock Harbor, especially with a kayak. Are you camping? If so, you can only stay 1 consecutive night at the R.H. campground, but there are several within easy p...

Re: What camera should I bring?
Scotty, you got me looking more closely at chest packs. After looking I'll probably pick up a Lowepro Toploader Zoom 50 AW. Has D rings on 4 corners you can use to attach to pack straps, or you can get their chest harness. Also has a built in rain cover that tucks away, although I'll have to see bef...

Re: 1st timer
If you're taking the Voyager and you want to go to Chippewa Harbor, where do you stay when it stops overnight at Rock Harbor? I would assume you have to stay in the campground there but wondered if you can just sleep on the boat. I was thinking of getting dropped off at Chippewa Harbor and paddling...

Re: Meat n' Cheese
Nelson Cheese super sharp cheddar. I'll bring several lbs back to N.C. when visiting family in Eau Claire, WI--there's a store there but not sure where else you can get it (well in Nelson, WI anyways)--any help from folks up there? I haven't resorted to ordering and shipping it (yet).

Re: What camera should I bring?
Previously I've brought a Lumix similar in size to your Canon and had been pretty happy. But last year I brought my new D7000 and 18-200 lens (total 4 lbs 8 oz w/ bag) and am planning to bring it again this year. For me I figure if I'm asking the question, then I know the answer, but as Don says, it...

BRING CASH! New User Fee Collection Procedure
From the Voyageur II/Seahunter III website: "PARK USER FEE COLLECTION HAS CHANGED! NO LONGER WILL IT BE CHARGED TO YOU WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR TRIP. YOU WILL NOW NEED TO CALCULATE YOUR USER FEE, $4 PER DAY PER PERSON INCLUDING ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DAYS, AND HAVE IT READY FOR COLLECTION BY A CREW ME...

Re: 1st timer
Hey Bill, I think I have a fair idea of what you're looking for now, but not sure how long you're thinking. Since I think I have my own trip as planned as can be for the moment, I was thinking about yours. Here's a another idea if you're looking at a week or more, since most campgrounds have a 3 nig...

Re: Study of Black Bear caused deaths
From the end of the article: ".. people should behave differently around different bears. With a mother defending cubs, “you just back away calmly and give it some space,” Dr. Herrero said. “With a predatory bear, you stand your ground, stomp at it, throw rocks at it, whatever you need to do to...
