Re: Help with a short trip - Isle Royale Newbie
Either way is good, I would recommend going to Feldtmann first with new hikers you will hit great views sooner. Going the other way it is more a walk in the woods for the first day. Still nice I really enjoyed it but apparently people like vistas

Re: Help with a short trip - Isle Royale Newbie
the Feltdmann loop is very scenic, there are some sections that are deep in the woods and or swamps, but there are also many times where it opens up! We just did that loop the other way this last June. We saw all kinds of moose in Feldtmann lake, we even saw 2 wolves (I wouldn't expect that), the fi...

Re: IR Trip 6/6-6/10
Great trip report! Mole skin and duct tape is the best blister preventer and cure that I have found when on the trail! Just cut a hole in a pice of mole skin a little bigger than the blister and stick that "doughnut" around it cut another piece the same size without a hole, and put it fuzz...

Re: Canoe rentals at Windigo
So if I read Lucky Chicken's post correctly, a full day's rental is only 8 hours ?I would like to paddle out to Beaver Island and explore it and spend the night. My math tells me I would want the canoe for longer than 8 hours. Correct? Yes, but they will let you overnight apparently if conditions a...

Re: Canoe rentals at Windigo
From our June trip, we wanted to paddle out to Beaver Island our last night and camp there. We were told in the store that you have to modify your itinerary (no big deal) to show beaver island and that is the only overnight use they will let you have. Also a half day is 4 hours and a whole day is 8 ...

Re: Isobutane propane fuel
I bet you could still work out a fuel drop from the V2, you just cant mail it... heck they might even buy the fuel can for you, for a fee.

Re: Katadyn Water Filter
good point tightlines. I have an MSR gravity filter, it is very nice but I usually dip the whole bladder in the lake/ river/ whatever and let it hang until the outside is dry again. This lets it settle.

Re: Kayakers rescued
That's what I thought too tree rattt. I know if you get stuck in the Great Smokey Mountains and SAR has to come get you (helicoptor or otherwise) you pay for it. Never been in that situation... i'll walk out with my sprained ankle and save 10k thanks! Heck I would crutch out with a broken leg for 10...

Re: Tandem kayak
Paddling a double alone... done it, not much fun. Also done it with a kid in the front... much better. Not as easy as a single but very doable. If you are both paddlers get two singles, you can both go where you want and you will have enough room for your camping gear. Doubles have enough space for ...

Re: Kayakers rescued
I meant a cost to the kayakers. If you are stuck on a mountain search and rescue will come get you in a helicopter for ~10k minimum. Some insurance covers this, but not most. You can actually get search and rescue insurance. http://www.backpacker.com/blogs/62

Tiger Musky
So, my uncle claims I caught a Tiger Musky on my trip... I don't think it was, and also don't believe they exist in the inland lakes because there are no muskies in the inland lakes. Anyone here can tell me that I am wrong. Anyway, to settle the debate, what kind of fish is this? https://fbcdn-sphot...
