Re: Which end is more busy?

Feldman has a bit of everything. From woods, to water to ridges. Not as much exposed rock as, say, the Minong, but you will get beautiful views from the ridges. I am pretty sure I am in the minority here, but I recommend going counter clockwise. You will have a steep uphill to Island Mine, but you a...

Re: Itinerary advice welcomed!

Welcome! I am sure you will enjoy your trip. Yes, it is all doable and I would not worry about anything being too wet. I have never bought fuel at Windigo, so I will let others answer that. The trails should be easy enough to spot. Over the ridge at the center of the island, it will be rocky, so you...

Re: Which end is more busy?

The East end is far busier. I doubt any one will disagree.

As for routes, I think the Feldtmann Loop is one of the best for a great taste of the island. If you go around to McCargo, crossing over to Chippwa and Moskey is very nice too.

Re: Mid-May Route Ideas

DONT FORGET! McCargoe Cove boardwalk to east chickenbone is really dangerous. Will be closed mid June to get fixed and McCargoe dock will be closed awhile. Thanks. No problem for me--we will be going to Todd. Surprised to hear about the dock. That will have a big impact on folks' plans for the summ...

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)

One final thought just occurred to me--I usually bring one extra meal. Just in case a ferry is delayed.

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)

Welcome to the Forum! For breakfast, I usually do instant oatmeal with some dried fruit and Starbuck's Via. On some days, I will do an egg dish on a tortilla. You have lots of freeze-dried options. For lunch, tortilla and PB&J or salmon (foil packet). For dinner, Mountain House, or something sim...

Re: [Info] Backcountry Zones

Two years ago, I got a back country permit for between Windigo and N. Desor with no problem. It was pretty buggy at the midway point, we did not camp there and went all the way to Windigo instead. But there was no problem getting it.

Re: Water taxi to Hidden Lake Dock?

Last year, I was charged $58 for the taxi to Hidden lake. I met up with two other hikers and invited them to share the ride and they were charged $58. Here is my receipt: Date of Taxi: Monday, September 07, 2015 Passengers/Watercraft: 1 Current Rate: $58.00 Deposit Amount: $58.00 Deposit Made: ****9...

Re: Knife perferences

I should have mentioned this in my first posting: I almost always carry a Leatherman multi-tool. I have used the small pliers far more than the blade.

Knife perferences

So, what do folks prefer? Folding or straight? Larger or smaller? Brands? Multi-tool versus simple blade?

I ask out of curiosity. I just used my REI dividend on a straight blade, even though I have no rational need for one. The grown up in me says small multitool. Thoughts?

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2016 Edition

I ordered a fix-blade knife-- the "Gerber, Strongarm Fixed Serrated, COYOTE". I have absolutely no way to justify it, as I already own many folding knives. But with the dividend and discount, it was almost free! I could not afford not to get it. I may start a thread of preferred knives--bi...

Re: Newbies first trip to IR

SHHHHH! Don't tell folks that the West Side camps don't fill up, you will jinx us! I am not sure the comment above, that if a camp is full you are authorized to use a group site, is totally correct. While I doubt there would be any problem from a ranger if the group site is not reserved (as in the c...

Re: Ranger Programs

I have attended a few, at both RH and Windigo, and enjoyed them. It is a bit of a throw back. But in these days of high tech, powerpoint, etc., it is nice to have a simple talk. Just seems to fit the setting.

I want to echo Tom. Lane Cove would be the better choice. It is still a long hike, but a very nice site
