Re: Intermediate or Whittlesey?

I have not stayed on Intermediate, but just the fact that Whittelsey has a good walleye population (and I was able to catch many of them) would sway my vote! Also, I was able to hear the waves crashing on the Lake Superior shoreline from Whittelsey. If that's something that appeals to you, I'm not s...

Re: Water Taxi Info

the park map shows about 1/2 of Moskey Basin as No Wake, and an area in front of Mott Island all the way across R.H Wow, that's it? I'm surprised. When we took the taxi last year, the Captain made it sound like it would be a huge difference in travel time.....thanks for clearing up my assumption......

Re: packraft Chippawa Harbor thru inland lakes

slosteppin, I'm not sure what type of packraft you have, but if it's an inflatable, you may be overestimating the amount of effort it will take to paddle on a calm day let alone into a headwind. I was also considering a trip similar to yours until I tested out my packraft in my 5 acre pond in the ya...

Re: Water Taxi Info

A couple things to keep in mind: 1) All or a portion of Rock Harbor is no-wake. There are 2 options (at least the last time I took the taxi), go outside the harbor and get there quick or go down the Harbor and 'see the sites'. 2) the water taxis are also charter fishing boats. Depending on when you ...

Re: Recommended sleeping bags / pads for IR

Too funny. I mean come on, what the heck kind of name is that for a sleeping bag? Not to mention the fact that I can leave my distress signal flag at home since the dang thing is 'solar flare' yellow....

Re: First time Canoe Trip to IR

Don't forget the water taxi option. While they are not cheap, they sure add some 'options'. They can drop you off / pick you up from Malone thus saving you those 'static' days waiting for the V-2 depending on which end of the island you are arriving / departing.

Re: Recommended sleeping bags / pads for IR

Thanks for all the feedback and great info! I'm sure many future visitors will find it useful. So here is what I finally ended up with and what I will experiement with on my trip in May: North Face Kazoo 30deg down bag (Long 2lb 3oz) - main reasons for choosing this bag was the size of the cut (I ha...

Re: Packraft

Not yet, but I have a Flytepacker packraft that I purchased over the winter and I plan to take it on my trip this spring to IR.

I've inflated it in my basement to confirm it will hold air and it seems pretty durable. My only concern will be keeping those nasty pike teeth away from it.....

Recommended sleeping bags / pads for IR

Ok, so there is some random data scattered around and hidden within various threads regarding sleeping bag and pad recommendations for IR. I figured I would start up a new, specific thread to address the topic. I know I severely underestimated bag temp requirements on my first trips and hopefully th...

Re: Favorite Boat only Campsite

I've only hit a few 'boat only' on my kayak trip last year, but out of those, Lake Whittelsey is my favorite, probably due to the fantastic fishing.

I plan to do a '5 fingers' trip via kayak or canoe next year, so I will be watching this post :D

Re: Water taxi ride share anyone? May 31st RH to Moskey? SAV

Update: I've booked the water taxi from RH to Moskey Basin on May 31, 2013. The taxi will depart at 12:15 (weather permitting of coarse).

I've updated the main post, so please take a look up there for details if you are interested in sharing the taxi ride and saving $$!!

Thanks!

Re: W.Chickenbone to Todd Harbor and back to W.C. loop in a

Can anybody be two places at the same time? If a tree falls in the forest (specifically, at WCB) and wipes out your tent, and you're not there to hear it, does it make a sound? Too funny. I really did 'laugh out loud' on that one!! I guess it would be better for me to be sleeping in a shelter...

Re: W.Chickenbone to Todd Harbor and back to W.C. loop in a

I'm not sure that you can "camp" in two spots at the same time. I agree. Kinda tough for one person to camp in two spots at the same time. The plan would be to leave my gear, not leave camp set up. Who is in possession of your "spare food"? The W. Chickenbone camp fox, jays, wol...
