Re: Backpacking with a basecamp in the middle
Instead of taking a water taxi from RH to Chippewa, you could overnight in RH your first night, then take the Voyageur to Chippewa the next day. Less expensive, but just be sure to check the Voyageur schedule carefully. They overnight in RH every other day, except for Fridays. Actually, for 6 peopl...

Re: Queen Done For the Season
They put some Queen IV passengers on the Ranger II (from RH to mainland) this morning and have chartered a bus to take them from Houghton to Copper Harbor when they get in. The Queen IV went out early this morning and just arrived at RH (9 am) to bring a load back, and plans to make a second run thi...

Re: Queen Done For the Season
Sounds like they'll make a few more trips to bring folks home, as weather permits? Imagine there would be a serious risk of stranding folks if they continued to bring folks out--a small craft advisory is extremely limiting, esp this time of year.

Re: 5 Day Menu
Sounds great! This summer's trip was the first time I made some dehydrated meals--worked out great, much better than the standard MH meals. As a dehydrating newbie, I'm still experimenting and looking for new ideas. So far I have three go to's: spaghetti, hash, and backpackers Thanksgiving. Also str...

Re: Pregnant on Isle Royale
There is no healthcare on the island, the best you could hope for is a ranger EMT, or perhaps another visitor who was a medical professional. You most certainly would not want to go into labor there. On one trip my son-in-law broke his wrist and it took 2 1/2 days to get back to the mainland and a h...

You're hitting all the favorites! I might head out for Daisy right off the boat on day 1--that would give you a layover day along the way.

Re: Itinerary insights..
I'd have a couple of itineraries in mind in case of seaplane delays, but here's a possibility. It hits Moskey Basin and McCargoe Cove, two of the favorite CGs on the island. If you lose a day due to delays or choose to layover a day along the way, you could skip Three Mile at the end--or hike in on ...

Re: Mt. Franklin Fire - many east end trails, Lane Cove & Three Mile closed
The Isle Royale NPS account on instagram says that investigators are looking for information on an illegal fire and associated camp on the Mount Franklin Trail the evening of August 12 and into the morning of August 13th. Here's the NPS FB post with contact info: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid...

Re: Mt. Franklin Fire - many east end trails, Lane Cove & Three Mile closed
Any idea what this means for folks taking the seaplane? I’m headed to RH on Friday and planning to hike the Minong. It doesn’t look like there’s a route out of RH right now. If by some stroke of luck they decide to drop folks at Daisy, I’ll still need fuel. I'd be working on a Plan B coming and goi...

Log from canoe trip with my brother Dan. Mon, 7/25 Full boat, a lot of scouts. Met Bobcat1 from the forum who was doing a solo hike. Following seas built during the day, but remained a pleasant ride. Was disappointed that the cormorant greeting party was absent from the rocks as we approached Beaver...

$6 for 5 min. Didn’t ask about towels since we had them, but they have had them in the past for a buck or two more. Hopefully someone else has current info.

Re: Is new store in Windigo open yet?
I was on the island last week and was told zero work has been done on the new building since last year. Equipment will be in soon to dig a trench around it to fix leaking into the lower level. There was some equipment there on 8/2 and NPS folks walking around and pointing. From what I saw from the ...

Agree with JerryB. Used Picaridin most days, but not terrible. We were on the big lake, not inland, the whole trip.
