Re: Rock of Ages light house restoration

Thread bump- how was your experience? We had the pleasure of meeting two of the project leads at the Ranger Station during our visit this summer, seemed like great people with a solid plan.

Re: Life of a Ranger on IR

IME the Rangers will share a few details about their lives on the island, but there was always a palpable 'filter'; then as we got to know a few of them they mentioned that the NPS has a pretty strong ethos of focusing on the guest experience and ensuring that the guests keep their attention on wild...

Re: Windigo Cabins

Update from our visit this summer (late June)- on a whim, after getting our permit we checked in at the store and wowza! Someone cancelled and a cabin was available all week. We decided to go to Siskowit Bay for two nights and stay in the cabins the other nights. We prepaid and obtained the numeric ...

Re: Windigo Cabins

I tried to make reservation back in January and was told they did not accept reservations until a date is near future which I can not remember now, but did call back on that day they started to accept reservations and could not get day I wanted in early June. I tried a couple of other days around t...

Re: Windigo Cabins

Thread bump; third year in a row where I've tried to get a reservation for even a single night once work/kid schedules were out and allowed us to book. Nothing during our time on the island. When my wife expressed interest in maybe overnighting on IR (separate from our dad/kid hiking trip) and I que...

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

I have T Mobile, but I don't get reliable texts or data anywhere north of GM. My iphone will show tower reception, but nada on data.

If you trial, I'd suggest starting with AT&T

Re: Newbies - 6 day 5 night on the Island

Renegadesnowman64, Welcome! As Ingo alluded to, your route of transportation to the island is a significant factor in determining your arrival point and then the possible trails. Are you arriving via the UP or Grand Portage? Flying or boating? The best part about IR is that you're not locked into on...

Re: Feldtmann Loop vs Minong

Either route sounds fine; let's face it, a crappy day on IR beats a nice aimless day in a cubicle/office/etc. This will be our 10th year in a row to IR, we did the Minong two years ago McCargoe->Wash Harbor and Feldtmann loop last year (for the ?fourth time) Windigo to backcountry zone 3 (somewhere ...

Re: How do you include fresh fish in your menu plan?

I let the folks who just came back from L. Superior fishing do all the work. They filet it, cook it and say, "Oh by the way, help yourself." I had some lake trout Saturday evening at the Chippewa Harbor dock. Lucky me. Took my calorie count up to about 3000 for the day. I like stories lik...

Re: Inland Lakes

I have also heard of them being used in medical industry... not that those ones came out of a lake. I pulled a few off last week also... not worried about it as long as the sore dosent get infected. Leeches are indeed used, most often after re-attaching a digit (finger, toe, etc). They are applied ...

Re: Itinerary with kids?

First, absolutely do come to IR, don't let this part of the vaca slip away for minor logistical reasons. If you're coming from MI, coming to IR via Duluth would mean you'd have to be out of Duluth by oh-dark-thirty to ensure that you'd make the Sea Hunter (not much traffic in the early AM, but it's ...
