Re: Boiling + filtering = too much?
Ditto the other responses. Just boiling requires a lot more fuel. Plus there will be the occasions when you roll into camp with empty water bottles, very thirsty, only look forward to a wait for the boil and a longer one for it to cool. Pre-filtering is always a good recommendation when the source h...

Re: Fishing pole needed?
Certainly you could do that and maybe even have some fun. It could work fine in some other lake, filled with Bluegill or Sunfish, where a cane pole with a bobber is the norm, but what you are most likely to hook on Isle Royale is a Northern Pike. A stick with a hard fixed line will be no match for t...

New Resource for Historical Information
An old post I made regarding a link to searchable database of Isle Royale structures is broken again and I haven’t been able to repair the link. My repair efforts resulted in this new discovery, an online search engine of “Properties Listed in the National Register of Historic Places”. It’s a rather...

Re: Itinerary Question - camping 4 nights
When schedules are shorter, a lot of people seem to stick to the trails and campsites along the Rock Harbor channel (Three Mile, Daisy Farm, and Moskey Basin). IMO, the big thing they are missing is the portion of the Greenstone Ridge trail that offers some great panoramic views. The above 3 campgro...

Congratulations Chief. Do you know yet where you'll be putting your feet up and how you'll be getting around?

Re: Moskey Basin to RH Lighthouse
Another access method is the M.V. Sandy tour boat from Rock Harbor lodge, once it's back in operation in 2022. They will also drop you off at Daisy Farm on their way back.

Re: 1st Trip Ever, August 21-28
Two thoughts:
1) If you departed from Grand Portage instead of Grand Marais you could then follow either the Voyageur II or the Sea Hunter ferry.
2) You could trailer to Houghton and hire the NPS Ranger III to take your boat over ($150 one-way).

Re: Moskey Basin to RH Lighthouse
I agree with dcclark. Much of the southern shore of Moskey Basin (past the marshy portion) is a very thick boreal forest with a lot of scraggly Balsam Fir. It would very hard going on a bushwack. Here's a picture of the trail from the lighthouse to the Bangsund Cabin which is quite close to the ligh...

What is the plane's policy for drinking alcohol (carrying, not consuming to be clear )? A bottle of Everclear or equivalent would work just fine as it is 95% ethanol.

Re: Rock Harbor vs. Windigo
Rock Harbor for her and Windigo for you. Oh? Wait! That's not what you meant? Seriously though, based on your description of her present state of mind and body, Rock Harbor for sure (with still some caveats for 2021 due to Covid). There's the lodge, the cabins, the restaurant, the grill, wate...

Looks like the bugs are out
Well, at least one, even if it's only a house fly or maybe a horse fly.
I keep watching, waiting for a moose to walk by. It happened once while I sat up on the Ojibway tower.

Re: CPAP Machine
Any experience with a CPAP on IR? Oh!, I had a terrible experience. :( Back in June 2000, 4 of us made my first power boat trip with a good friend's boat. We mostly base camped out of Daisy Farm. My friend had a portable CPAP but all I remember about the unit is the battery died or broke the very fi...
