Nasty Weather

Has anyone heard how IR survived the nasty front that just blew through? How did the ferry boats do? They were predicting 3' - 6' waves and heavy rain.

Re: Highway 61 Construction (2015)

Thanks for the update. We're planning on staying at the Casino ($59 / night). This is a lot cheaper than anything in Grand Marias and worth the extra $ than saying in a tent in the Casino RV park.

Highway 61 Construction (2015)

Does anyone know if there is construction happening on Hwy 61 again this year?

If so, where? and how long is the delay?

Re: Water Taxi

A message for Tightlines.

I see you're taking the water taxi from Rock Harbor to the Lookout Louise dock.

Do you have a phone number for a reservation and cost of the boatride?

Re: Is GPS recommended on Minong

My daughter and I were on the Minong in 2013. Most of the trail is easy to follow assuming the cairns are still in place. We did get lost once, between Desor and Windigo. I was leading and following the trail when it suddenly disappeared into a bog. I pulled out the GPS and it confirmed we were abou...

Re: are there any Lakes that you wouldnt drink from?

There was a stretch of water on the Minong that was traversed by a very long plank bridge. It looked like liquid manure. I have never been so nervous crossing a plank bridge as I was at that moment. One false step and in you would be submerged. It seemed to go on forever and I was so thankful to be ...

Another Lane Cove question

I am planning on visiting Lane Cove this year and staying two night. Here's my question . . .

Should we hike there from Rock Harbor and use the layover day to hike to the Eastern end of the Greenstone and Lookout Louise OR

Should I take a water taxi to the Greenstone trailhead and hike to Lane Cove.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2015 edition

You guys know that if you have an REI Visa card you can use it on any purchases and get 1% back towards a rebate?

I use mine for gas purchases, restaurants, hotels, entertainment, etc.

I got a rebate of $172+. Add that to the 20% off coupon and looks like Wally might be getting new hiking boots.

Re: Tent question

I personally would find a friend and expose them to the beauty of Isle Royale. They might even have a tent you both can use. I've brought 4 other people to the island and have enjoyed each trek because of their uniqueness and experience. As far as gear, I use a Eureka Apex. Mostly dry, even in very ...

Re: Wendigo to North Lake Desor.....advice wanted!

My daughter and I did this stretch of the Minong in 2013. I'm 55 years old and this really tested my limits of endurance. We started early enough, but it was an all day hike. I thought about setting up camp in the backwoods, but Windigo was so close and we pushed on. We only got lost once, but GPS g...

Re: First Time to the East Side

This plan seems very doable. Moskey Basin is stunning. Glad to see you guys aren't rushing back to Rock Harbor for the last night. Every time I've stayed at Three Mile, I've been rewarded with a moose sighting. Are you the couple my wife and I talked to on the trail to Huginnin last year? I see you'...

I would rather spend the last night at Three Mile and hike back to Rock Harbor in the morning.

Re: Building a Boardwalk

How long is that boardwalk on the Minong between N. Desor and Windigo? That one ran on forever. Plus it was over some pretty sketchy water.
