Re: Portaging from Tobin to 3 Mile

The "official" Tobin Harbor-to-Rock Harbor portage is the Suzy's Cave trail, as can be seen on the map in the park newspaper, the Greenstone.

Most literature on the subject seems to only make mention of the portage at the vicinity of Rock Harbor campground/lodge, which is certainly easier.

Re: Diver dies on the Kamloops

Very sad news.

Hopefully delayed response time due to the fact that the nearest open ranger station was Windigo as opposed to Amygdaloid Island as would normally be the case was not a factor in the death.

Re: Warming Lake Superior affecting fish

There's an element of uncertainty in any scientific study or research; science observes what is happening, but determining the cause is always more complex. Scientists don't attempt to downplay this fact, which can give their findings seemingly less confidence than many of us have grown accustomed t...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

The two locations from which the largest percentage of Isle Royale can be seen would likely be the Mt. Ojibway and Feldtmann Ridge observation towers. I've only visited Ojibway, but on a clear day the entire eastern half of the island is easily visible from there. Of course, the best panoramic view ...

When I took the Ranger in 2010 there was a display in the passenger area showing the boat's current location and GPS track.

Re: First boat

I notice that according to the NPS the park officially opened April 16th. Has anyone here ever come to the Isle in April before the first boat? I'd think this could be a bit hazardous as you'd have to pilot your own vessel over, but for those looking for the ultimate in solitude this would be diffic...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail

You need a special backcountry permit to camp at any location other than an established campground. Of course, in an emergency situation, I am confident that the rangers would be understanding of your need to violate this policy, but I imagine the burden of proof would be with you to explain your ne...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail

This is definitely doable, though it will make for a long first day. The good news is that the most difficult section will be the first one--the climb up onto the Greenstone on the Mt. Franklin Trail. Once you're on the Greenstone, it's pretty easy hiking, with few steep hills; most grades will be d...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock

The easternmost dock at Three Mile was closed when I was there in 2010 (looked like it had buckled due to ice over the course of the winter as the concrete was cracked and uplifted), but was repaired and reopened in 2011. That would seem to disprove the idea that the docks are going to be removed th...

Re: "Off-season" consecutive nights stay limit at campground

Is this a problem that you and others have encountered? I agree that in theory this change may be useful to consider if the current policy begins to be abused, but so far I don't see any evidence that it's warranted. If it were to become a problem, I would much prefer to see more shelters or tent si...

Re: Need advice on a 4-5 day trip

There is certainly merit in taking advantage of the opportunity that arriving after Labor Day presents you with to use Rock Harbor as a basecamp and just do day hikes from there. You would have no limitation on how well stocked your pack can be, only having to lug it as far as a shelter or tent site...

Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

Interesting info, Bergman. I wonder how they were planning to go about closing the trail. It seems preposterous to me to go to the trouble and expense of constructing signs or, even worse, a fence barricading it. Perhaps they were simply going to cease maintaining and clearing it; I agree that would...

Re: Need advice on a 4-5 day trip

I have made two trips to the Isle, both 4-5 day loops from Rock Harbor. Either of these itineraries would, I believe, make for a great introduction to the island and allow you to see most of the best that the east end has to offer. Trip 1: Tuesday: Ranger from Houghton to Rock Harbor, day hike to Sc...

Re: Feldtmann Firetower Status?

Google is mum on the topic, except for a reference to the possibility of its removal in the IR backcountry plan that you mentioned. While I can see the benefit of removing the tower in terms of returning the Island to a more pristine natural state, I don't feel that its presence detracts enough from...

Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

I agree that raising the user fees for the park would be far preferable to cutting back on existing services, though I'm guessing that's not an option at present to avoid the impact of the sequester for this year. In the meantime park visitors, especially those visiting areas of the park nearer to e...
