Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)
One final thought just occurred to me--I usually bring one extra meal. Just in case a ferry is delayed.

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)
Welcome to the Forum! For breakfast, I usually do instant oatmeal with some dried fruit and Starbuck's Via. On some days, I will do an egg dish on a tortilla. You have lots of freeze-dried options. For lunch, tortilla and PB&J or salmon (foil packet). For dinner, Mountain House, or something sim...

Re: [Info] Backcountry Zones
Two years ago, I got a back country permit for between Windigo and N. Desor with no problem. It was pretty buggy at the midway point, we did not camp there and went all the way to Windigo instead. But there was no problem getting it.

Re: Water taxi to Hidden Lake Dock?
Last year, I was charged $58 for the taxi to Hidden lake. I met up with two other hikers and invited them to share the ride and they were charged $58. Here is my receipt: Date of Taxi: Monday, September 07, 2015 Passengers/Watercraft: 1 Current Rate: $58.00 Deposit Amount: $58.00 Deposit Made: ****9...

Re: Knife perferences
I should have mentioned this in my first posting: I almost always carry a Leatherman multi-tool. I have used the small pliers far more than the blade.

Knife perferences
So, what do folks prefer? Folding or straight? Larger or smaller? Brands? Multi-tool versus simple blade?
I ask out of curiosity. I just used my REI dividend on a straight blade, even though I have no rational need for one. The grown up in me says small multitool. Thoughts?

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2016 Edition
I ordered a fix-blade knife-- the "Gerber, Strongarm Fixed Serrated, COYOTE". I have absolutely no way to justify it, as I already own many folding knives. But with the dividend and discount, it was almost free! I could not afford not to get it. I may start a thread of preferred knives--bi...

Re: Newbies first trip to IR
SHHHHH! Don't tell folks that the West Side camps don't fill up, you will jinx us! I am not sure the comment above, that if a camp is full you are authorized to use a group site, is totally correct. While I doubt there would be any problem from a ranger if the group site is not reserved (as in the c...

Re: Ranger Programs
I have attended a few, at both RH and Windigo, and enjoyed them. It is a bit of a throw back. But in these days of high tech, powerpoint, etc., it is nice to have a simple talk. Just seems to fit the setting.

Re: [Info] Backcountry Zones
I want to echo Tom. Lane Cove would be the better choice. It is still a long hike, but a very nice site

Thanks. I agree with you on balancing on the log. I just waded across (I put on water shoes so my boots stayed dry). My son just skipped across the log. Youth. GRRRRR

Re: Can you please review our itinerary?
Enjoy your trip. A few points: Group or not is not interchangeable: only groups can camp in group sites and they can only camp at group sites. Groups cannot divide up and take, for example, two shelters. The only way for groups to divide up is if they are on entirely different itineraries with zero ...

Re: Ridge trail or loop???
I agree with Tightlines. Doing a loop instead of the Greenstone is no sacrifice. Consider Moskey, Chippewa, McCargo and maybe lane Cove as destinations. I would also consider at least one layover day somewhere to give the kids a break. Finally, leave time at Rock Harbor to do the Stoll Trail and eat...

Re: Stream Crossing just before Little Todd (heading West)
Thanks to you both. I was there two years ago and the water was no where near waist deep, although that was later in the year. The "bridge" had thinned quite a bit too. I waded, figuring I was sure to slip off the bridge.
