Would 8# test line be sufficient?
is there a possibility of catching trout from any of the docks or shore locations on Lake Superior during the spring? If so, I may have to pick up some trout lures.

Re: Shore Fishing Lake Superior
Jaw spreaders! I would not have thought to get them. It makes sense. Is a 7' midweight 2 pc rod too difficult to carry on a pack, considering I will be doing a lot of brush busting? I have my eyes on a new St. Croix Triumph 6'6" Medium 4 pc travel spinning rod. Or I may borrow my friends 6' two...

Re: Shore Fishing Lake Superior
Actually, I am thinking about bringing a spinning rod and throwing some spoons, mepps, and rapalas. I do have a 9 foot 8 weight salmon/steelhead fly rod but it is a two piece; a little too long to drag through the brush.

Re: The first time
1. Does the Voyageur II leave Windigo in time to catch the Isle Royale Queen back to Copper Harbor? No. Arrives at Rock Harbor approx. 4:00 PM EDT. Queen departs 2:45 PM EDT. 2. Is the Voyageur II the only boat back to Rock Harbor? Yes. Only other option is to take the seaplane back to Rock Harbor.

Shore Fishing Lake Superior
I am planning an early June trip to Isle Royale and will be fishing the interior lakes for the first time since my first two trips in the 70’s. Since I am traveling by foot, shore fishing will be my only option. I am an avid fly fisherman and am working on acquiring the gear and lures necessary to c...

Re: Family Trip this August
Welcome to the forum. You have chosen a good route; many first timers to the island take that same route. You will be traveling during the busy season at Isle Royale. The campgrounds could fill up later in the day so an early trail start is always advised. The bugs tend to be winding down in mid to ...

Re: Affordable Lightweight Tent?
I currently use the MSR Hubba (1 person) for my solo adventures and I like it a lot. If I was in the market for a freestanding 2 person tent I would seriously consider the MSR Hubba Hubba like KevinI suggested. It has 2 doors and 2 vestibules which gives each person easy access and personal gear sto...

The shortest hike from Lane Cove to Daisy Farm is via the Greenstone Ridge Trail (7.2 mi). This route takes you to both Mount Franklin and Mount Objibway. Enjoy them both!

Siskowit, for the name of the mine between Daisy Farm and Threemile. There is also another spelling for the lake and peak, Siskiwit.

Re: Favorite Freeze Dried Flavor
I dehydrate my own ground beef. I use very lean meat. Cook thoroughly and break up into uniform size pieces. Blot off all excess fat. Rinse with hot water to remove any remaining fat. Dehydrate at 145 degrees (Excalibur Dehydrator) for 4-6 hours or as appropriate.

Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
Robin621, I noticed that you will be spending a lot of time in the backcountry. FYI, here is Cross-Country camping rule #6. Maximum stay at any one location is one night. Tents and camping gear must be moved at least 1/2 mile from the previous nights stay. This is related to the LNT principles of no...

Re: Handheld GPS units on IR
An entry level GPS (low tech, low cost, no or minimal mapping) and a map with UTM grids (i.e. National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map of Isle Royale) is what I use for backcountry travel. Along with a UTM grid ruler I can plot coordinates from the GPS to the map and from the map to the GPS. I als...
