Re: Week-long sit-on-top kayaking trip?

Completely agree with Ingo (who has a lot more experience than I do). The McCargoe to Chippewa (or Malone) trip is great. My favorite campsites are Richie Canoe, Intermediate and Wood, and Whittlesley has the best fishing. Look forward to seeing more moose than people when you paddle the inland lake...

Re: Thoughts on trip plans please

I like how you have an extra day in your plan. So if you get to Richie (or Moskey?) and decide to spend 2 nights, you can. If so, you can easily hike back from Daisy Farm on the morning of your final day.

Re: A comprehensive question

Gimpy Malone, summer of '74. He had to be evacuated for emergency podiatric treatment given the severity of his blisters. Several days later, he learned that his efforts were in vain, since he had overlooked hiking the portage trails.

I for one am happy that the inland lake portage trails were put in (or further developed?) since then.

Re: Tip-to-Tip Trip

If I were backpacking the length of the island, I doubt I would carry fishing gear (pole, lures, net, fillet knife, fry pan, oil, breading - think of the weight!), since the lakes along the Greenstone and Minong (with the exception of Chickenbone) reportedly don't have good fishing. Even at Chickenb...

Re: Four day canoe trip

Very nice, but it's probably going to take a total of 6 days, 5 nights to do that route. Be aware that the Voyageur II can take you and your canoe from Rock Harbor to Chippewa, and from McCargoe to Rock Harbor, but you need to be sure that its schedule matches up with yours (it circumnavigates the i...

Apparently they're excluding all the European moose, which is a little sad.
