Re: Primus Stoves

That's a nice stove. I used to use the Brunton Optimus (now Primus) and my biggest complaint was the lack of wind protection, but this has it, so that's pretty rad. I have a jeboil unit which uses 3.5 oz butane canisters. does the ranger have these on the island? we are flying in and fuel is not all...

Re: Should the forums upgrade? You get to decide.

Hey all, Thanks for the feedback. Let me address some questions: 1) A new server would not help alleviate spam. What causes all this spam is our popularity, and as we appear more and more on search engines like Google--and our user community grows--so do we as a target for spammers. 2) Glad to hear ...

Should the forums upgrade? You get to decide.

Alright all, I wanted to pose a question to the forums. Since this is *everyone's* forums. Currently, the hosting bill for the site is $120/year for the hosting (the server in the clouds where the files for the web page sits), plus $10/year for the rights to the domain name "isleroyaleforums.co...

Re: Sleeping gear in late August

Don_P: If you want a good price, check your local gear shop for LaFuma bags...they are good bags for a good price, and you can usually find them at most local gear shops.

Re: Sleeping gear in late August

In my years selling and buying gear (mostly the latter, unfortunately), you never want to cheap out on women's bags. While women-centric technologies in sleeping bags seem like a gimmick, I can assure you they are not. Women, in my experience, need more padding around the hips, and warmer foot boxes...

Re: May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Well, this is why I said this itinerary is "tentative." We already have to postpone our trip because of a date conflict. :( We're still planning on doing this itinerary, but the dates have changed. So thanks very much for the feedback...it's good to know our time frame will work for this t...

Re: Midwest Mountaineering Spring Expo

Hey, sounds great Tom. Drop me a PM and keep me posted.

But what sounds even cooler is that you will be presenting...AND presenting about IR! If it's a go, make sure you post it up here and the forums and I'll make my way down to see it...hopefully so will others!

Re: Article on IR wolf genetic problem

Damn John, you're too fast. I was trying to post this at work earlier when I saw it popup, but they blocked the IR forums at work! Lame-o!

Anyway, nothing I hadn't already read about in this article, but the first comment at the bottom is really from a narrow-minded individual! :x

Re: Midwest Mountaineering Spring Expo

I will be there, probably on Saturday. Great presentations and great deals on gear. Between this and the REI dividend, I usually get set for gear for the year.

Re: Looking for an Itinerary..

Another vote for the water taxi to Chippewa, then hiking back to Rock Harbor. Don't bother taking the water taxi to Daisy, because you can hike there in a few hours.

Re: Why Isle Royale?

Very good read, Ingo, thanks very much. Being in Rock Harbor and seeing the people working there, I've always wondered what it would be like to live there. Are the employee dorms still the same ones as back in '79?

May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Every year, a small group of friends and I have made our way to IR for an early-season hike. We've been doing it for 5 years, and I think we've covered most of the island on foot. Now, we're taking it to the next level: we're going to try and paddle. I've done the BWCA once, paddled a canoe plenty, ...

You two crack me up with your little exchanges, hahaha.

John: thanks for the info. VERY good and VERY important, so thanks for making a separate thread on it! (Although everyone should read the Greenstone no matter what!)

That's a beauty of a jacket, Vitz!

Backpacker534: I'll never not use an air mattress. Sleeping comfortable in the woods is the most important thing to me, so I don't cut any corners on my beauty sleep.
