Re: TR: 6/2019 GRT/Minong/etc.
Thanks for the TR! Whenever I see those huge trees being felled by beavers, I can't but help but want to stop one and ask, "Now, exactly how to you plan to move that once it's down?" I also wonder if once the wolf population establishes, if this little beaver issue might go away... I also ...

Re: Tobin Harbor access to Mt Franklin trail?
I'd say you have one of two ways to do it, depending on your wayfinding skills. The "can't get lost" route is to paddle to the Duncan Bay portage (nearly straight across from the Rock Harbor/Tobin docks) and hike the portage trail up to the Greenstone. That stretch of the Greenstone is ver...

Re: Itinerary Input...
I like Itinerary 2 better than 1. No way I'd want to put in that last day, coming in to RH exhausted, only to find all the shelters full and then I spend the time setting up camp... even if there is running water.:-) I might even recommend trading McCargoe for Chippewa. Both equally beautiful, but C...

Re: Picnic Tables in Group Sites?
Yes. I checked a few campsite photos to confirm, but from all the group sites I recall, if the shelters and individual sites have them at that camp, so does the group site. Note, however, sometimes they may get shuffled around and not properly returned, so your results may vary or you may need to po...

Re: Monster Lake Trout
...to determine how Lake Trout are doing... ...I'd say that one is doing just fine! Imagine catching that if you were out in the kayak or a canoe. (I did catch one heck of a monster northern in Wood Lake several years back, and we had no way to get it into the canoe. The only option was to get it t...

Re: Rain Gear?
I.R. is a 'damp' place. When I go I bring a rain coat & pants, and Gortex/full leather boots. Even in July hypothermia is real, so staying dry is key if it's a cold, rainy day. I personally have the tried and true Marmot Precip for the jacket, and will wear that on the trail if it's raining. Unl...

Re: Kayaks - how long is too long?
Welcome to the forum! I would say it depends on how you intend to portage them. As you may have read, wheeled portage devices are not permitted, so then it becomes a question of a tandem carry or not. A few of the portages you will encounter (Chippewa to Whittlesey, Intermediate to Ritchie come to m...

Re: Zebra Mussels and fishing gear
I wonder if they caught any fish after that? Ha. I was thinking the same thing. At least it's propylene glycol and not ethylene. Maybe it will turn out to attract fish in the same rumored way spraying WD-40 on your lures is supposed to work. I always cringed when I saw folks do that and drop it in ...

Re: Zebra Mussels and fishing gear
Should I be concerned about unintended transport of them on lines and small fly lures, or only larger objects like boats and buckets? Boats and buckets. Most zebra mussel transport occurs at the veliger (final larval) stage. They get into ballast tanks, live wells, etc, and then get discharged into...

Re: Feeble First-Timer, Seeking Affirmation
Welcome to the forum! Isle Royale is a perfectly fine place to be cutting your teeth to backpacking, provided you put in the planning - And it's clear you're already doing that. I'll echo dcclark's recommendation for a rest day, and agree you could cut out Ritchie, but I'll offer a different opinion...

Re: Cook Kit Storage Question
I tend to use a tea-pot instead of Jetboil setup, so in my case, the canister doesn't fit (I put the cookstove in there) so I just carry that in a pack pouch. However, it's very common to see it carried in the cookset. If it leaked, most would depart as a gas, anyway. If you're super obsessive, thou...

Re: Washington Creek first night?
Agree with Bobcat1, you can play your arrival and the weather forecast. Since it sounds like this is your first trip, don't underestimate Isle Royale and the Minong; that first day has a lot of up and downs and I'd want to give myself as much time as possible. If you stay at WC, you could hike the H...

Re: Todd Harbor/Little Todd Stream
As, yes. The "floaty log bridge." While it would be nice to get a TR from someone this year (can't wait for you to tell us!) my hunch is that expect more of the 'wet log' crossing than the rock hop. Every time I've crossed it in May or June, that's been the case, so I'll just go with law o...

Re: Landing a kayak at Belle Isle, Lane Cove?
If the waves are coming in at Belle Isle's camp, just keep paddling past the dock and there is a small bay (and remnants of a small dock) just around the bend to the north. It's a very easy entry point, and connected by trail to the rest of Belle.
